#Former Grammys Chief Calls Rape Allegations 'Outrageous' After Investigation -BB
Neil Portnow, former Grammys CEO, denies the rape allegations against him, calling them „inaccurate, false and outrageous and terribly hurtful claims.“ The allegations were made by Portnow’s successor as CEO, who was recently let go from her position.
After 17 years as Grammys CEO, Portnow stepped down at the age of 72. Portnow had faced criticism following a comment he made about women needing to „step up“ at the 2018 Grammy Awards, for which he formally apologized. Now, he is facing a much more serious controversy after his successor, Deborah Dugan, accused him of rape. According to the Associated Press, Dugan revealed that she had learned about various sexual harassment accusations made against Portnow, and ended up losing her job after she reported the accusations to the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. The allegations were made just days before the 62nd Grammy Awards on Sunday, January 26, after which time Dugan was put on administrative leave. Portnow vehemently denies the allegations.
In a statement, Portnow denied the allegations that Dugan made against him, explaining that the Recording Academy had conducted an independent investigation. He said, „This document is filled with inaccurate, false and outrageous and terribly hurtful claims against me. There was no basis for the allegations, and once again I deny them unequivocally.“
Portnow was not the only colleague Dugan had made accusations against. She also accused music attorney Joel Katz of attempting to kiss her without her consent. Katz denied these allegations as well. A group of women from the academy’s executive committee came in defense of the academy, denying Dugan’s claims that it functions as a „boys club.“ Claudine Little, former Director of Administration, also defended the academy, calling out Dugan for her alleged „abusive and bullying conduct.“ Despite the strong stance against Dugan amid her accusations, her lawyer stated that she has been the target of so much criticism because she’s someone who has „the courage to stand up for what it is right.“
The entertainment industry at large is entering a new era in which individuals are being held accountable for their inappropriate behavior. However, setting a new standard as large and as sensitive as this is easier said than done, and this situation between Portnow and Dugan is just one of many in which reaching the truth is especially complicated. At the very least, officials steps are being taken to guarantee that serious allegations like these aren’t merely swept under the rug.
