Anime Awards 2020: Meet Our Categories and Judges!!

The 2020 Anime Awards are soon approaching, and we’re excited to share a few updates with all of you today! This is our fourth Anime Awards, and we’ve been working hard to make it better every year! Please read ahead on updates to our categories and judges.

The following categories will be part of our live show on February 15th, 2020 at 5:00pm Pacific:

Anime of the Year

Best Director

Best Animation

Best Character Design

Best Score

Best Fight Scene

Best Couple

Best Protagonist

Best Antagonist

Best Boy

Best Girl

Using voting data, social media engagement, and most importantly, direct feedback from fans, we feel we’ve found a strong mix of categories embracing and showcasing the incredible talents of the anime industry and the elements that delight fans the most. That said, this list is not complete! We have additional categories that you’ll be able to vote on, but we’ll be revealing those at a later date, so if your favorite category isn’t here, please look forward to further updates!

You’ll be able to see the full list of nominees for each category on Friday, January 10th, 2020 – the first day of voting! Please make sure to check theanimeawards.com to be the first to vote, and return each day for your daily vote through the entire voting period!

Our categories aren’t the only thing that’s supercharged this year – for 2020, we’ve increased our number of judges by more than 50% to bring in an even broader range of perspectives, with more than half our judge team coming to us from outside of the United States. Judges are industry experts hand-selected based on their reputation, regard, and credibility. Our judges come from a range of different backgrounds, cultures, and careers, which we think best represents the diversity of anime fandom.

Not only do judges select all of the nominees for the Anime Awards, but they help contribute to deciding the eventual winners as well! This year, the points that judges assigned in the nomination period will be weighted 70/30 against the fan vote to decide the final winner in each category. In the rare event of a tie, the judge favorite will serve as the tiebreaker. We believe this change will allow for a greater diversity of titles to win the awards, and will make for a more satisfying lineup.
