#Community: 5 Best & 5 Worst Episodes Of Season 4 (According To IMDb) -BB

The fourth season of Community proved to be the one filled with the most controversy. After season three, creator Dan Harmon was let go of his duties via text message. The network had issues with the way he chose to work and replaced him with two new writers in David Guarascio and Moses Port.

There was also the departure of Chevy Chase during filming. The whole show had been turned upside down. According to most fans, the show didn’t feel the same in this season. Dan Harmon has gone as far as to refer to it as the „gas leak“ year. Not all was bad, though, and we’re here to see how the IMDb users felt about this string of episodes.

10 Worst: Conventions Of Space And Time (7.4)

It was clear early on just how different this season of Community would be. Episode three, „Conventions of Space and Time,“ showed just that. At first glance, the concept feels fine. Abed brings the study group along to an Inspector SpaceTime convention, where everyone has their own side adventure.

Abed met a friend who could be his „soulmate“ but it goes awry. Britta and Shirley join in on a focus group, while Annie pretends to be married to Jeff. Annie’s storyline, in particular, was disappointing but the whole episode seemed to separate the group too much.

9 Best: Paranormal Parentage (7.6)

In previous seasons, the worst episodes sometimes scored at least an 8.0/10. Here, the fifth-best doesn’t come close. That should tell you about this season. „Paranormal Parentage“ was the second installment of the season. It showed that even during a down stretch, they still did well with holiday episodes.

This was a Halloween edition that saw the group’s plans thwarted when Pierce locks himself in his panic room. It worked like a haunted house style tale and gave us more of the fun costumes we’ve come to expect from the show. That includes Jeff as a boxer and Annie hilariously misinterpreting her ring girl costume.

8 Worst: History 101 (7.4)

The premiere immediately set the tone for what this season would be. There was a lot of potential and a lack of fulfillment. For example, the idea of an episode surrounding a Hunger Games-like competition to earn a spot in a History of Ice Cream class sounds like classic Community.

That would be a recurring theme throughout season four. The new showrunners seemed to have strong ideas for the high-concept episodes the series was known for. However, the comedy and story beats never quite hit the way they should have. That was the case here.

7 Best: Advanced Introduction To Finality (7.8)

In a lot of ways, „Advanced Introduction to Finality“ could’ve worked as a series finale along with being the season finale. Jeff Winger finally graduated and many of the characters were shown moving on by the end. It was as if their story arcs had been completed.

Jeff struggles with the idea of moving on past Greendale and is unsure of what to do. It ends up leading to the alternate versions of the characters from the „darkest timeline“ showing up to go through with their evil plan. That part ended up not being real but it helped Jeff realize what he wanted to do.

6 Worst: Alternative History Of The German Invasions (7.2)

The fourth episode of the season, „Alternative History Of The German Invasions,“ saw the study group run into a gang of German foosballers. Sound familiar? Anyone who consistently followed this series would remember that a similar storyline played out in season three.

That time, the episode featured a great anime sequence and a bunch of scenes of Abed dressed at Batman. This go-around, not only did it come across as a retread, but it also wasn’t anywhere near as good. We also got the start of the „Changesia“ plot, which was never great.

5 Best: Herstory Of Dance (7.9)

Dean Pelton has never been one to shy away from throwing dances. In season one, he sported a shirt celebrating the five that he threw and that number grew in later seasons. In this, the eighth episode, he planned a Sadie Hawkins dance. In typical Britta fashion, she was upset about it.

In protest, she threw her own Sophie B. Hawkins dance with an appearance by the real Hawkins. Most notably, this marked the debut of Rachel, played by Brie Larson. She instantly had a connection with Abed. Dan Harmon even admitted that the character was one of the best things about this season.

4 Worst: Intro To Felt Surrogacy (7.0)

This was another case of the season having a good idea that ultimately missed the mark. The majority of this episode played out like an homage to The Muppets. When the Dean used puppets to help the study group get past a problem, the tale gets told through these toys.

The story wasn’t up to Community par and that might have been why this was loaded with guest stars. Jason Alexander and Sara Bareilles appeared while Marron 5 frontman Adam Levine helped write an original song for it. It wasn’t enough to help. Of note, this was the last episode that Chase filmed.

3 Best: Basic Human Anatomy (8.1)

Back into the world of 8.0 ratings and higher. „Basic Human Anatomy“ is the eleventh episode of the season. There was plenty of fun to be had here. Troy and Abed discussed their favorite movies about body-swapping and spend the day acting as if they’ve switched bodies.

It turns out to be a way for Troy to break up with Britta without hurting her. Elsewhere, body-swapping hilarity ensued when the Dean touched Jeff and Annie suddenly found herself attracted to him. You also can’t help but laugh at the thought of Leonard as valedictorian.

2 Worst: Economics Of Marine Biology (6.8)

Not only does this rank as the lowest-rated episode of the season, but it is also the worst scoring episode in Community history. „Economics of Marine Biology“ is the seventh installment, and focused on the Dean and Annie trying to woo a wealthy student to Greendale.

Reviews felt that it came across like a normal episode but was hollow and lacking any feeling. Also, it just wasn’t all that funny. There’s some decent bonding between Jeff and Pierce, and a fine small subplot for Abed. That main story was a swing and a miss though.

1 Best: Heroic Origins (8.2)

The penultimate edition saw Abed do research on the backstories of each member of the study group, discovering that they all had met before coming to Greendale. Some were obvious, like Troy and Annie attending high school together. Others were more surprising. The most shocking thing was that Abed turned out to be the villain of the group.

His chance encounters with them in the past led to things like Annie getting in trouble for drugs and Shirley missing a big night with her husband, who then went on to cheat with a stripper that Jeff defended in a case that Britta was staging a rally to support. They argue but eventually reunite at the frozen yogurt shop where they all happened to decide to come to Greendale in the first place.
