How The Flash Died In The Crisis On Infinite Earths Comic

WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Crisis on Infinite Earths and The Flash, season 6 episode 9, „Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3.“

Ever since its first episode, The Flash television series has hinted at Barry Allen’s eventual death during some kind of Crisis. With the Arrowverse now adapting the revolutionary Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline as a live-action crossover event, there is some question as to how closely the show will follow the comics in regard to Barry’s eventual demise.

Viewers have been prepared for Barry Allen not returning to The Flash after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Most of season 6 was devoted to Barry making preparations for his disappearance, such as training Cisco Ramon to take over as the leader of Team Flash and promoting Elongated Man as his successor in being Central City’s chief superhero. Previews of upcoming episodes after Crisis have also hinted at the return of Kid Flash and Iris West forging a new partnership as she works to protect the city in her husband’s absence.

Ironically, it was a surprise when Barry Allen didn’t die and survived the destruction of the multiverse; one of seven Paragons fated to do so, who emerged as the only survivors of the positive matter reality at the end of „Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3.“ Yet, Barry’s prophecized death seemed imminent earlier in the episode, when he was prepared to sacrifice himself to destroy the anti-matter cannon that was unmaking reality. In the end, Barry was replaced by his Earth-90 counterpart, who temporarily stole his speed and used that energy to give himself the second wind needed to save the day and his doppelgänger.

This scene played out almost precisely as it did in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comics, where the Barry Allen of Earth-1 died a hero’s death in Crisis on Infinite Earths #8. Imprisoned on the planet Qward in the Anti-Matter universe, Barry Allen was able to free himself and set about dismantling the anti-matter cannon that the Anti-Monitor planned to use to destroy the 5 remaining positive-matter Earths with one shot. Running faster than he had ever run before, The Flash used the energy generated by his own velocity to push back against the energy generated by the cannon, overloading it and triggering a massive explosion. When the Anti-Monitor surveyed the wreckage, he found nothing but the remains of Barry Allen’s costume and his trademark gold Flash ring.

The equivalent scene in The Flash episode of the Arrowverse crossover event was a fitting tribute to both the original comic and the 1990 The Flash television series. As the Barry Allen of Earth-90’s body began to dissipate just like in the comics, he thought of his wife, Dr. Tina McGee, and how they once affirmed their faith in one another, no matter what. This mirrored the Crisis on Infinite Earth comic, where The Flash died thinking of his loved ones and how he could die content, knowing that they would be saved by his actions.
