L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files review for PlayStation VR

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files 1

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files 2
L.A. Noire was released back in 2011 by Team Bondi in conjunction with Rockstar Games and the VR version is a remake that condenses the original plotline down into eight cases.

The VR game has been adapted into first person (originally third-person neo-noir crime game) and is set in an almost perfect eight square miles of 1947 Los Angeles and as Officer Cole Phelps you’re mission is to investigate, solve and shoot your way through the crimes around L.A.

I’ve played a couple of games that have been adapted to V.R. where it didn’t add anything to the gameplay but L.A. Noire adds to a whole new level of fun. Once I finally mastered the controls I was racing around the streets in my patrol car, checking crime scenes for vital clues and blasting gang members with my shotgun – like a pro.

Starting the game you’re put on a quick training course of how to use the controls (it’s all pretty simple) but what I was most impressed with was the amount of detail. You don’t just open a car for and begin driving – you have to reach for the ignition, start your sirens and can even blast your horn whilst driving through traffic – for those who aren’t too excited about the idea of driving all over L.A. there’s also a magical lever that literally teleports you to your set destination. My favorite thing was the shoot outs – again, it’s not just a point and shoot type game, you have to open the barrel of your gun, empty out the bullets and load up the ammo before you can blast away.

Speaking of detail, I was also impressed with the visual side of things – sure, it’s not the most visually stunning game out there right now, but being able to look around yourself in this immersive world has a nice feel to it. Blood splatters up the walls, overflowing trashcans and fully kitted out stores make it feel like you could be walking around this world for real. The best part of it is the people – someone walking past in the street is just as detailed as the guy you’re interrogating back at the station.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files 6

I had my brother over and we were taking turns playing and sometimes it’s a little isolating playing the VR (usually they’re single-player games) – however, L.A. Noire seemed to keep us both entertained throughout. Obviously, there were a lot of laughs when our immaturity took over and we were making rude gestures with shadow puppets but even when we were trying to be a little more sensible it kept us both laughing for hours. The fistfights alone were enough to have us reeling on the floor when your floating arms flopped about like a wet salmon at the side of the screen as you slapped the mob about a little before finishing them with an uppercut (or my personal favorite a scissor jab – one fist each side of the head like you’re trying to pop a tube of toothpaste!)

My driving skills also left a lot to be desired (if you’ve seen any of my other reviews on driving/racing games you’ll know it’s not my forte) and my brother spent most of the night demanding me to use the ‘warp to destination’ lever every time I ran someone over or smashed directly into a mailbox. Still, it was fun screeching round corners into unsuspecting pedestrians or trying to do handbrake turns only to end up spinning the car and not knowing which way I was supposed to be heading.

Each case seems to consist of a few various tasks – searching crime scenes for clues and evidence, shootouts with bad guys, racing through the city with your partner, questioning eyewitnesses of the crimes, chasing those who try to run from the law and interrogating them back at the station once you’ve had a bit of a fistfight. It’s not a wide spectrum of variation but it never feels repetitive – apart from my only negative point below.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files 5

There was one part of the game I didn’t like so much and it was the interviews/interrogations – the first time you have to interrogate a guy you’re sent into the room and he asks for his lawyer – you begin questioning him and then get given a list of clues and evidence to try and coax a confession out of him. I expected it to just continue the conversational flow until I chose the right note to use. However, each time I clicked on one, he’d refuse to speak until his lawyer was present and you’d be sent out into the corridor to be shouted at by the Chief – then back in you go to start all over again and click on the next note to see if that worked… I spent about 20 minutes (if not longer) going through the same dialogue over and over until I finally chose the evidence to use against him and got my confession. It’s only a small part of the game I guess, but when the rest is quite interesting or fast-paced, this seemed to create a lull in enjoyment and I almost gave up a couple of times. Still, whilst he was babbling on about the same rubbish I’d already heard, I did enjoy doodling in the detectives’ notepad (and of course, there were a couple of immature ones drawn – admit it, you’d have done it too!)

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files 3

PSVR still has a long way to go before it’s at the smooth level it should be but the games which are already out are good for a giggle and some definitely have the intended effect (Resident Evil 7 VR had me shaking in my boots). L.A. Noire is definitely one of those games – it’s just a nice easy play through which really adds a new dimension to the original game. If you’re looking for something to pass a few hours and you enjoy gathering evidence or firing a few shotgun shells into mobsters, this could be one for your library.
