Luigi's Mansion 3 review for Nintendo Switch 6
It is impossible for me to ignore the bond between myself and Luigi. I grew up as a little brother and so, of course, I was ALWAYS Player 2. Naturally, over the years it made me grow to love these characters, specifically Luigi though. After seeing the news that Luigi’s Mansion 3 was coming, it is safe to safe that excitement would be an understatement!

As the story begins, we are treated with the hilarious visual of Toad driving a bus and barely, if at all, able to see over the steering wheel. He is driving to a hotel as Mario, Peach, Luigi, Toad and some friends have been invited to stay. Shortly after arriving though Big Boo reveals himself to have escaped and he has captured all of Luigi’s friends. Luigi once again must prove that he is the unsung hero in the Mario series. The problem is that you are in a massive hotel and the ghosts have removed all the elevators buttons. To be able to access the other floors, Luigi needs to go to each of the floors and find the buttons to restore the elevator, that way he can find all his friends and escape!
Luigi's Mansion 3 review for Nintendo Switch 2

For everyone that may not have played the first two Luigi’s Mansion games, these games differ from your standard Super Mario games in nearly every way outside of having the beloved characters from that universe. Of course, you play as Luigi and instead of jumping on goombas or Koopa Troopas, you are armed with a vacuum cleaner and you suck the ghosts up! Oddly enough, recently I reviewed the remake of the Ghostbusters Game and so it is interesting to see how both games tackle battling ghosts.

It is interesting that in some ways, Luigi’s Mansion 3 has some RPG-esque elements, specifically that everyone has hits points. To capture any of the ghosts that you encounter on your adventure, you have to drop their health to 0. Different enemies require different tactics to capture them, from a simple flash of light all the way to having to pull a shield off of them first and then ‘flashing’ them. You can also do damage by spiking them into each other once you have one stuck in your vacuum.

Personally, my favorite part of the game is the unique boss battles that you have at the end of each floor. Each battle felt unique enough from each other that you didn’t feel as if you were using the same tired rotation of moves to clear it out. In fact, they all have their own strategies and I really like that. They never felt like they were necessarily hard, maybe only in the first few minutes as you are figuring out the fight you may lose some health, but once you figure it out, it’s smooth sailing!

There are no difficulty options but I would not describe Luigi’s Mansion 3 as a difficult game. In the entirety of the game, I think I only died 3 or 4 times. Even death doesn’t slow down our Hero though. As you make your way around the hotel sucking up ghosts and other objects, you will pick up money which ultimately can be used in E. Gadd’s lab. For 1,000 coins you can purchase extra lives, Boo ghost locators, and collectible-gem finders. If you are going for 100% completion then you will want to find the Boos and gems, but honestly, the internet is a great resource that will point you in the right direction for those. The extra lives will revive you immediately after you die in battle to continue the good fight. You can only carry 3 at a time, so you can imagine at the end of the game I had a massive amount of money!

This leads me to the one and only complaint I had with Luigi’s Mansion 3. I love that you can use the money for those few items but I still feel as if the money plays a minimal role in the overall game. I think that to play into that RPG-like nature, it would’ve been neat to have ways to power up Luigi’s Poltergust 3000. Perhaps to do more damage? Make the initial struggle with ghosts a little shorter? Either that or to find ways to make Luigi himself stronger with a bigger health pool? Maybe this is something that could be added to the next Luigi’s Mansion!
Luigi's Mansion 3 review for Nintendo Switch 4

Luigi doesn’t have to save his friends alone this time around. Because of an accident in E. Gadd’s lab, he was able to make a partner that looks and acts exactly like Luigi. Of course, this is the Mario universe so the gooey Luigi doppelgangers name is Gooigi! Gooigi is there to do all the things that Luigi literally cannot do unless he enjoys walking on spikes that is! The best way to describe him is if Flubber and the T-1000 were to join forces as he can walk through spikes, go through grates on the floor among a host of other things. Remember he is exactly like Luigi, so he also has his own Poltergust 3000 which certainly is used in moments where teamwork is necessary. If you have a 2nd controller, the whole game can be played with a family member or a friend.

I have little to no doubt that Luigi’s Mansion 3 is one of my favorite exclusive games this year to come out on the Nintendo Switch. All in all, the game never feels like it is overstaying its welcome and doesn’t present too much difficulty. There is plenty of laugh out loud moments and visually the game is top-notch. Even after you finish the game, there is still enough bonus stuff to do that you may put anywhere between 25-30 hours into the game and never get bored
