Pokémon Sword and Shield Tops Japanese Video Game Charts for 2019 -BB

Japanese video game website, Famitsu, released its list of 50 most sold video games in Japan for 2019 on January 20, with the Nintendo Switch and Pokémon dominating the competition. Of the top 10, only one game, Disney’s magical Kingdom Hearts III, did not release on the Nintendo Switch, showing the clear preference for Nintendo’s handheld/home console hybrid in the region.

Even though the Pokémon Sword and Shield only released with a month and a half to the end of the year, the juggernaut of a debut for the first mainline Pokémon game had the game selling nearly 3x more than the second-highest selling game of the year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Five games in the top 10 are Mario spin-off games, with Super Mario Odyessy not even making the top 30.

 

Here is the top 10 of the list, note that games released prior to 2019 have their full copies sold in brackets:

 

1. Pokémon Sword and Shield – 2,988,134 copies

2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 1,092,397 copies (cumulative 3,530,352 copies)

3. Kingdom Hearts III – 861,226 copies

4. Super Mario Maker 2 – 800,504 copies

5. New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe – 747,589 copies

6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 628,712 copies (cumulative 2,659,909 copies)

7. Minecraft for Nintendo Switch – 622,894 copies (cumulative 1,145,939 copies)

8. Luigi’s Mansion 3 – 505,998 copies

9. Super Mario Party – 498,857 copies (cumulative 1,263,710 copies)

10. Ring Fit Adventure – 495,639 copies

The next 15 games on the list, making up the top 25, is a more diverse list, with Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding taking the 21st slot. Though PlayStation 4 games appear on the list, still over half of the games in the top 25 were released on the Nintendo Switch, giving the hybrid consoles 17 spots in the top 25 list.

12. Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee – 431,629 copies (cumulative 1,680,306 copies)

13. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition – 417,462 copies

14. Resident Evil 2 (2019) – 400,833 copies

15. Splatoon 2 – 378,340 copies (cumulative 3,252,760 copies)

16. Fishing Spirits Nintendo Switch version – 336,995 copies

17. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 301,657 copies (cumulative 1,481,349 copies)

18. Yo-Kai Watch 4 – 291,878 copies

19. Fire Emblem: Three Houses – 273,905 copies

20. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – 267,666 copies

21. Death Stranding – 262,827 copies

22. Pro-Baseball Spirits 2019 – 259,227 copies

23. The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening – 250,947 copies

24. Persona 5 Royal – 244,050 copies

25. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown – 220,195 copies

The full report with all 50 games can be read over on Famitsu’s website, with some pretty hyped games helping rounding out the list near the bottom. These include Shonen Jump crossover game, Jump Force, at the 36th spot with only 130,293 copies sold in 2019, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 at 43rd place with only 110,603 copies sold in Japan.
