Project Sakura Wars Debuts at #2 on Video Game Sales Chart

It’s going to be a few months until the world at large can get their hands on Project Sakura Wars, but Japan is already showing their support for the latest installment in the retro mecha series according to the latest Famitsu sales rankings.

The rankings count both software and hardware sales within Japan each week. Unsurprisingly, Pokémon Sword & Shield continues to ride high, holding steady at #1 for the fifth consecutive week. The Anglophile take on the monster-catching franchise racked up more than 230,000 sales from the week of December 9-15, placing total copies sold at over 2.3 million.

Project Sakura Wars came in at over 140,000 sales on its first week, attracting both long-time fans and new players. The new installment, which features character designs by Bleach creator Tite Kubo, knocked Luigi’s Mansion 3 down to third place on the charts.

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo Switch continues to lead the pack in both the first and second spots—with the standard Switch racking up 155,000 sales and the Switch Lite selling 81,000. The PlayStation 4 sits at a distant third with approximately 7,300 units sold this week.

Project Sakura Wars is set for a worldwide release in Spring 2020.
