The high resolution footage, which has also been slowed down, offers the clearest look at the explosion in the Lebanese city yet.
“I experienced this white-hot glass exploding. I don’t know if I jumped or the shock waves pushed me, and I found myself on the floor,” Agoston Nemeth, who shot the footage, told News Flare. “I noticed shattering glass and people screaming. I looked around and saw this huge orange cloud above me.”
Nemeth, a 42-year-old therapist, had just started a session at around 6 pm Tuesday when he heard a loud popping sound and went to investigate on a 13th floor terrace, he told the outlet.
Nemeth saw smoke billowing from the port building and left his iPhone recording on the terrace, which was roughly a half mile from the explosion — then walked back inside.
That’s when a powerful blast is shown ripping towards the camera, sending smoke billowing into the sky, and knocking down towering buildings. The camera falls to the ground and goes dark.
“I noticed it was getting bigger and bigger, some huge flames came out and suddenly there was this, ‘boom.’”Nemeth said. “I didn’t know if [my] building would collapse.”
Nemeth escaped with just bruises on his shoulder — but others weren’t as fortunate.
At least 154 people were killed in the explosion and 5,000 were injured, according to Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan.
