“2020 Pokémon World Championships Venue, Dates, and Details”
The 2020 Pokémon World Championships are coming, and many are wondering about the venue, dates, and other details they need to know. Each year, players from around the world gather to do what they do best: play Pokémon. The top Pokémon players from around the world gather to compete for prizes and bragging rights.
The annual event welcomes both Pokémon video games and TCG players who have excelled at Championship Series events. Players earn Championship Points as they compete and the very best are invited to compete in the event. The 2019 event featured a bit of drama after the winner’s trophy broke almost immediately after it was handed to him. The young man kept his composure very well and his trophy was ultimately repaired then replaced. This represented a black eye for the event and is something the organizers likely seek to avoid this year.
The Pokémon Company International has announced the location of 2020’s Pokémon World Championships. It will be held at ExCel London between August 14-16 and, as always, will be open to anyone who wishes to purchase a spectator’s badge. If one is unable to make it, they can watch various live streams of the Championships. The event will feature all of the usual things one sees at such gatherings: food, lots of opportunities to purchase Pokemon merchandise, and scores and scores of dedicated Pokémon fans. To get an idea what the action will look like, one needs only glance at the finals match of the 2019 Pokémon World Championship in Washington, DC, as is seen in this YouTube video.
Players are organized into three divisions: Junior (under age 12), Senior (ages 13-15), and invitations are determined based on division and geographical region. For instance, a 9-year-old TCG player in South Africa would need to earn 150 Championship Points at official League events to earn an invitation. In the United States, that same player would need 350 points. An adult in the U.S. would need 500 points. Day Two invitations are awarded to the top players among those who earn invitations to the event. The top four players from the 2019 World Championships automatically can compete in this year’s tournament.
All in all, this promises to be an exciting event for fans of both Pokemon video games and trading card game. The organizers will almost certainly avoid such embarrassment as a poorly-constructed trophy that breaks in a child’s hands after his victory. However, the best players from around the world gather at this event, so the matches themselves are sure to be exciting.
