“Doctor Strange 2 Reportedly Casting Magical Marvel Hero Brother Voodoo”
Another Marvel hero may be joining Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as casting calls appear to be teasing Brother Voodoo. When Marvel Studios announced a sequel to Doctor Strange last year, it quickly became apparent how important it could be to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will co-star Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and open up the Marvel multiverse for Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to explore.
In the months since Doctor Strange 2 was announced, though, the film’s scope has continued to grow. Instead of just being a solo film for Doctor Strange, the movie will reportedly feature several different notable Marvel characters. New details about the film appear to indicate that America Chavez aka Miss America will be included in some fashion. She would join a supporting cast that is expected to feature returning characters Wong (Benedict Wong) and Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and now another Marvel hero may also be joining the film.
According to a casting call obtained by The Illuminerdi, Marvel is looking to cast a supporting male character for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness who is of Caribbean descent, with Haiti mentioned explicitly. Although the breakdown doesn’t specifically name Jericho Drumm aka Brother Voodoo, the description matches Marvel’s Haitian sorcerer. At this point, though, it is not confirmed that this character is Brother Voodoo, so there’s a chance this could be a different character of Haitian descent.
In the comics, Brother Voodoo was first introduced in Strange Tales #169 in 1973. He begins training in sorcery, specifically Houngan, after the death of his brother, so his MCU story could follow a similar arc. His brother, Daniel Drumm, had a small role in Doctor Strange before being killed by Kaecilius. If Brother Voodoo is part of Doctor Strange 2, then he could prove to be a powerful ally to Strange against whatever threats they face across the multiverse. But, it’s also worth mentioning the multiverse’s prominence in the story could allow Voodoo to be from a different reality, perhaps even as an alternate Sorcerer Supreme.
Now that another character is rumored to be part of Doctor Strange 2, it will inevitably raise concerns the sequel is getting too crowded. Perhaps these additional characters could even be one of the reasons why director Scott Derrickson recently left Doctor Strange. That said, Marvel’s usual style with sequels is to make them even bigger than the previous film and introduce major characters in them. Some examples of this practice include Black Widow debuting in Iron Man 2, Falcon appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Scarlet Witch and Vision joining Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whether Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can balance a possibly larger cast could ultimately depend on who decides to direct it.
