#Rita Moreno Celebrates 90th Birthday with West Side Story Team

Veteran actress Rita Moreno may have just turned 90 years old, but she’s already looking for the next big role following the recent premiere of West Side Story. 60 years after first starring in the original West Side Story in 1961, Moreno returns in a new role in the new remake from director Steven Spielberg. Just after the remake premiered in theaters, Moreno rung in her 90th birthday, and the cast and crew of the movie were right there to help celebrate the occasion with her.

Per Deadline, Moreno was recently asked by Brent Miller, a producer of the acclaimed documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It, how it felt to turn 90. It seems to be just like any other year for the actress, who’s only thinking about what’s coming next after the new West Side Story‘s release.

“It doesn’t feel any different. On the face of it, nothing has changed,” Moreno said. “I’m older and deeply grateful for still being here. And inevitably, now there is concern about what’s next after West Side Story. And anyone who tells you otherwise is a damn liar.”

Miller added, “I can only hope that 45 years from today, I have half the spark, passion and love for my work, my country and humanity; as well as, the physical and mental ability to share it.”

Producer Norman Lear also refers to Moreno’s life as “one of the great American stories. She was three years old when she came here from Puerto Rico, and lived the life we celebrate today as she turns 90. God Bless America and God Bless Rita Moreno. I love them both.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, West Side Story helmer Steven Spielberg also said of his friend’s birthday, “I‘ve said 90 is a publicity stunt. She’s been planning her 90th birthday, but she‘s actually about 61. And she dances like a 45-year-old! And, by the way, that’s the truth. I have it on video.”

Moreno was also surprised with a pink birthday cake, complete with a candle for the 90-year-old to blow out. That’s when West Side Story co-star Rachel Zegler comes into view and leads the way in singing the birthday song to Moreno, as Moreno and Spielberg both join in. You can check out that video below.

Rita Moreno played the role of Anita, one of her most celebrated roles, in the original West Side Story movie in 1961; Ariana DeBose plays the part in the remake. Moreno’s new role in the remake sees her in the supporting role of Valentina, the Puerto Rican owner of Doc’s general store. The cast also includes Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, David Alvarez, and Mike Faist. Tony Kushner penned the new script, and Steven Spielberg produced with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Kevin McCollum.

A synopsis for the movie reads, “Love at first sight strikes when young Tony spots Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their burgeoning romance helps to fuel the fire between the warring Jets and Sharks — two rival gangs vying for control of the streets.”

Happy, happy birthday to Rita Moreno! You can catch her latest performance in West Side Story, now playing in movie theaters.
