“The Good Place Season 4: 5 Best Fan Theories About The End (& 5 Things We Don’t Want)”
The Good Place is quickly approaching its conclusion, but we’re not quite ready yet for it to be over. Despite the fact that it’s very nearly complete, we’re still not sure where all of these characters will end up; or if the fate of the universe is safe!
Fan theories have been so compelling over the past few years that the showrunners have had to avoid them so it doesn’t affect their writing! We’re therefore taking a look at 5 of the best fan theories about the show’s end and 5 we really don’t want to happen.
10 DON’T WANT: ALL FOR NOTHING
What if after all their work, as soon as the four humans and Michael leave, the system goes back to normal? Perhaps the judge overrules her decision or maybe Shawn has been playing the long game and tricked these five heroes one last time.
We really don’t want the system to go back to what it used to be. The newer way of working has some potential but it’s unclear whether the tests will be as successful once the humans are incorporated in. We’re hoping it all works out well!
9 DO WANT: STAY IN THE GOOD PLACE
There’s been plenty of fantasy and sci-fi films, series and comics over the past few years, but none seem to have captured the imagination of viewers in the same way that The Good Place has. This is due to the incredible world-building and really compelling characters.
After this journey we’ve all been on, we really want a happy ending and for Jason, Tahani, Chidi, and Eleanor to all get to the good place. It looked like they were on their way the last episode so we hope they just get to stay there from now on.
8 DON’T WANT: SENT TO THE BAD PLACE
The absolute worst-case scenario for the conclusion of this series is for humans to somehow end up in the bad place. That would mean that no matter how hard they worked to show that the system was flawed, somehow the demons managed to prevail.
We’d already seen the hint that they would sacrifice themselves to keep the system moving forward, so perhaps that’s an option on the table. It would just be a deeply unsatisfying conclusion for the group to find themselves tortured for the rest of eternity.
7 DO WANT: ELEANOR AND CHIDI
Some of the most romantic moments on the show have come from the couple Eleanor and Chidi. The two have really grown together over their many lifetimes and even though Chidi’s memory was removed for a time, all of his memories have now been restored.
For fans to get the ending they deserve then having Eleanor and Chidi close out the show as a couple would be a great way to finish. They don’t have to stay together for eternity but just to get the time together that they should have been allowed to have.
6 DON’T WANT: MICHAEL IS A HUMAN
The theory that Michael is actually a human has been circulating for some time. There are elements of this that actually make a lot of sense. This could be a form of torture for Michael and he’s just hoping that he can get to the good place.
Perhaps he’s some terrible criminal and there’s no squid monster under his skin at all. Yet, so much more of his abilities and relationship with Shawn makes very little sense that we think it would be too confusing to have this twist at such a late stage.
5 DO WANT: FLASH FORWARD
Many sitcoms have allowed us to take a look into the far future at what our favorite characters are up to now. Parks and Rec famously made this decision, even suggesting that Leslie Knope could become President in the future.
We’d love to see a similar ending but of course, it would be so different. The fact is, the show could go as far into the future as it wants. It has set itself up for eternity so the question really is what year would it actually stop on?
4 DON’T WANT: NON-EXISTENT GOOD PLACE
We last saw the main characters on a hot air balloon traveling to the good place. But one thought has crossed the mind of quite a few people. What if there’s actually never been a good place, which is why the judge was so resistant to sending people there.
It could be that it closed down years ago or perhaps never existed. Maybe this is all part of a master plan of the demons. Perhaps those who have been good get reincarnated to Earth and everyone else just goes into the depths of hell.
3 DO WANT: JANET IS GOD
Janet is one of the most fun characters on the show. She’s been a guiding hand to these characters for quite some time and while she continues to remind everyone that she’s some form of robot, there’s definitely a bit more to Janet than meets the eye.
Fans have been wondering if Janet is actually a form of god that has been on a mission to reform the system from the inside. Of course, there’s also the possibility that God couldn’t directly impact the system which is why she chose a demon and some humans to do so.
2 DON’T WANT: CHIDI IS A DEMON
Much like Michael being revealed as a human there’s also talk of Chidi actually being a demon. It would make sense considering in the past he’s deliberately made choices, like not lying, that has made everything a lot harder.
‘Wiping his memory’ was also a way to torture Eleanor and if this theory is true he would have also sabotaged the whole plan to change the system since it was Chidi who was responsible for a lot of it!
1 DO WANT: RETURNING TO HELP
With the humans, Michael and Janet flying away in a hot air balloon there was a part of us that thought there should be a little more to this story. It seems odd they would be so comfortable leaving it all in someone else’s hands.
We’d love to see them return to the medium place one last time in order to see whether their experiment is working and to ultimately show that this whole journey has paid off. Then they can go back up into the clouds again.
