Studio 4°C Works on Anime Film Adaptation of Picture Book Poupelle of Chimney Town

Internationally acclaimed anime production studio Studio 4°C (Tekkonkinkreet, Children of The Sea) is confirmed to work on an anime feature film adaptation of Japanese comedian Akihiro Nishino’s picture book Entotsu-cho no Poupelle / Poupelle of Chimney Town for a release in December 2020.

The all-color picture book was created by 33 different creators spending four years, and Nishino was attached to the project as the producer. It was published by Gentosha in October 2016 and has sold more than 420,000 copies so far.

Its story is set in „Entotsucho / Chimney Town,“ a chimney-filled town covered with black smoke, and tells a miracle story that happens to two people living in the city: Lubicchi, a kind-hearted young boy who cleans chimneys and lost his parents, and Poupelle, a man made of trash who visits him at the night of Halloween.

Yusuke Hirota (Berserk trilogy film CGI director) is attached to direct alongside character designer Atsuko Fukushima (PoPoLoCrois series). A teaser visual drawn by Fukushima is also revealed. The film is co-distributed by Toho and Yoshimoto Kogyo (Nishio’s management company).
