\n A Mississippi county supervisor is facing calls to resign after he said slavery has made African Americans more \u201cdependent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harry Sanders, a Lowndes County supervisor, made the racist remarks\u00a0to local news<\/a>paper the Commercial Dispatch after voting against relocating a Confederate monument on Monday.<\/p>\n

Sanders said African Americans have had a more difficult time \u201cassimilating\u201d after slavery ended than other groups who have been oppressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only ones that are having the problems: Guess who? The African Americans,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cYou know why? In my opinion, they were slaves. And because of that, they didn\u2019t have to go out and earn any money, they didn\u2019t have to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever owned them took care of them, fed them, clothed them, worked them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey became dependent, and that dependency is still there. The Democrats right here who depend on the black vote to get elected, they make them dependent on them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His comments came after the county voted along racial lines against moving a the monument that has stood outside the county courthouse in Columbus since 1912.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t had slavery in the United States for 150 years,\u201d Sanders told the newspaper. \u201cWhy is it still an issue?\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic State Rep. Kabir Karriem of Columbus, who is black, slammed Sanders\u2019 remarks as \u201capp<\/a>alling\u201d and urged him to resign.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really unforgivable how outlandish they were, knowing that he has black people in his district,\u201d Karriem said. \u201cHis revisionist history is not accurate at all. Our ancestors didn\u2019t want to be slaves.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Sanders on Tuesday doubled down.,<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to stand and run from it; hell, it\u2019s what I think,\u201d he said, according to the Clarion Ledger.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he understood why his comments sounded racist, he said: \u201cI certainly do but, look, you can\u2019t change history. Am I not supposed to talk about what happened 150 years ago?\u201d the paper reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt comes off (as racist) because of the way they put it in the newspaper. That\u2019s not the way I said, it but that\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n
