“#Bill de Blasio asserts control over Mets sale to Steve Cohen<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday asserted his control over the $2.475 billion deal to sell the Mets to Steve Cohen \u2014 saying he wouldn\u2019t bow to Major League Baseball\u2019s Friday deadline or share his personal opinion on the hedge funder.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not app<\/a>ropriate to be commenting on the people involved,\u201d Hizzoner said at his daily press briefing Thursday. \u201cThe Law Department is handling this. I\u2019m not going to issue personal views in the middle of that kind of review.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor also declined to discuss the specifics of his phone call to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred earlier this month \u2014 when sources told The Post de Blasio outright said that he opposed the billionaire\u2019s purchase of the Mets.<\/p>\n

Sources said de Blasio has been trying to halt the behemoth deal from taking place by weaponizing the Law Department, which is reviewing the sale that involves city-owned land.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to respect a private conversation,\u201d de Blasio told reporters Thursday about the call. \u201cI reached out to Commissioner Manfred simply to let him know that we had this legal responsibility and we were pursuing it and doing due diligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio reiterated that his decision on whether to sign off on the deal \u2014 seen more as a rubber stamp \u2014 will come \u201cvery soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand MLB has their process but we have our process,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just important to me to just let him know that we have a legal obligation and were going to fulfill it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what the mayor has said publicly and what he has told people inside city government appear to be at odds, and multiple sources have told The Post the mayor has been pushing the city\u2019s lawyers to find a way to halt Cohen\u2019s sale by using a clause buried in the Citi Field lease.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018due diligence\u2019 line is bulls\u2013t,\u201d a source familiar with City Hall told The Post Wednesday. \u201cHe\u2019s told [Major League] Baseball he doesn\u2019t want Cohen and he\u2019s told his Law Department to find a way to stop it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
