\n A Manhattan inmate slashed a guard so badly that she was left with a gash from her nose to her mouth \u2014 but a group of jailbirds flew to her rescue, sources told The Post.<\/p>\n

The inmate, identified by sources as Michael Haskins, 42, allegedly attacked the officer Tuesday with a shiv while inmates were eating at the Manhattan Detention Center, sources said.<\/p>\n

The officer was rushed to Beekman Hospital and had to undergo reconstructive surgery for the wound, the sources added.<\/p>\n

Other inmates witnessed the attack and pounced on Haskins, who was in on a felony assault conviction, the sources said, adding that the other inmates beat and punched him so badly that he also had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

The president of the correction officers union, Elias Husamudeen, said he hopes the district attorney will pursue attempted murder charges against Haskins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking that this inmate be charged with attempted murder. Because quite frankly, if not for the other inmates in the housing area, that\u2019s exactly what would have happ<\/a>ened,\u201d Husamudeen told The Post.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
