Writer\/director James Gunn<\/strong> has wrangled an eccentric cast of characters for The Suicide Squad<\/strong><\/em>, a team-on-a-mission movie inspired by films like The Dirty Dozen<\/em>. While he has teased some of the story so far, a new interview sees him finally pulling back the curtain a bit more to give us a better idea of what this film is about. And it sounds like it\u2019s going to be big<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the new edition of Empire Magazine<\/a>, Gunn swears The Suicide Squad<\/em> is a far bigger film than either of his two Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em> movies<\/a>. \u201cIt was becoming more and more bluescreen on my other movies, an it sort of bums me out a little bit to be spending three weeks on a set that is just a few painted purple rocks. But The Suicide Squad<\/em> is a big film with so many practical effects. We were really building giant sets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie was so big, in fact, that WB told producer Peter Safran<\/strong> that \u201cthis is the largest construction project on any movie they\u2019ve ever done.\u201d More than 100 sets were built for this film \u2013 and they\u2019re heading to an area that may be familiar to fans of the Arrow-verse and DC Comics. The movie\u2019s mission sends the team to a fake Latin American island called Corto Maltese, and Safran laid out the overarching goal: \u201cThere they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place.\u201d Sounds a lot like this will be DC\u2019s version of Bad Robot\u2019s WWII thriller\u00a0Overlord<\/em>\u2026though I suspect even more of the team members will die here than they did in Overlord<\/em>.
\nDC\u2019s competition with its rivals over at Marvel Studios continued in a different arena, too.\u00a0Dan Sudick<\/strong>\u00a0has worked as a special effects supervisor on every Marvel movie to shoot in Atlanta, and he also worked in that same position on\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>. \u201cHe thinks he did more special effects on this movie than all the Marvel movies combined,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cAnd that really is true, because we\u2019re crushing cars, we\u2019re blowing up tons of stuff, we\u2019re doing tons of squibs\u2026we could do whatever we wanted. There are no rules in terms of sex and violence and things like that.\u201d (Keep in mind that special effects refers to effects that actually happ<\/a>en on a set, whereas visual effects are added in post-production.)<\/p>\n

As for a potential sequel to The Suicide Squad<\/em>, Gunn says that\u2019s\u00a0\u201cdefinitely a possibility,\u201d and he says he has already written \u201cseven-and-a-half of the eight\u201d episodes of an HBO Max show centering on John Cena\u2019s Peacemaker character. The Suicide Squad<\/em> is set to hit theaters on August 6<\/strong>, 2021<\/strong>, and Peacemaker has not set a premiere date yet.<\/p>\n
