It\u2019s taken a bit longer than a \u201cquick bite\u201d for Quibi<\/strong> to be made available on TV-connected platforms. The mobile-only streaming platform, which made its ill-timed debut right in the middle of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, was intended for the commuter \u2014 for phone-dependent millennials to watch on the subway or in the office bathroom stall. But when the pandemic hit, Quibi\u2019s targeted demographic found themselves stuck at home and unable to play the mobile platform\u2019s line-up of star-studded original shows on their TVs. Quibi, which app<\/a>arently always planned to eventually transition to TV platforms, accelerated their plans to\u00a0transition from mobile-only,\u00a0fast-tracking the app\u2019s availability on TV casting devices such as Chromecast and Apple\u2019s\u00a0Airplay. Now, Quibi is eyeing Roku and Amazon Fire TV next.<\/p>\n

Variety reports that Quibi has been in talks with both Roku and Amazon about \u201cbuilding native apps\u201d for their connected-TV platforms, Roku and Amazon Fire TV, respectively. Discussions with Amazon have \u201crecently picked back up,\u201d Variety reports, while Quibi\u2019s talks with Roku are still in very early stages, with Roku apparently on the fence about the revenue-sharing agreement proposed by Quibi.<\/p>\n

Making Quibi available to watch on TV was always part of the plan, according to CEO Meg Whitman, but the pandemic has clearly accelerated those plans as the service\u2019s original billing as the \u201con-the-go\u201d streaming app wasn\u2019t going to happen.\u00a0Quibi added support for Apple\u2019s Airplay in late May, while Google\u2019s Chromecast and\u00a0Chromecast-integrated TVs were supported with an app update in early June.<\/p>\n

The company founded by Hollywood mogul\u00a0Jeffrey Katzenberg<\/strong> is in dire need of a subscriber boost that those TV casting devices could afford them \u2014 a\u00a0disappointing launch with a\u00a0slate of\u00a0poorly reviewed original titles could result in the\u00a0loss of half a billion dollars\u00a0this year, while Quibi\u2019s mobile app download and viewership numbers have fallen drastically short of expectations. At its current pace, Quibi is expected to have\u00a0less than two million paying subscribers by April 2021,\u00a0the Wall Street Journal\u00a0reported. (A number that Quibi disputes.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just been a storm of misfortune for Quibi since it launched in April, just a few weeks after the coronavirus pandemic had locked down the majority of the U.S. and forced its target demographic indoors and frustrated that they couldn\u2019t cast Quibi on TV. On top of that, it\u2019s silly name became the butt of jokes and continues to make headlines about its poor branding to this date.<\/p>\n
