With Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s confirmation, President Trump is now clearly \u201cthe most important president in the modern era when it comes to shaping the judiciary,\u201d cheers The Washington Post\u2019s Marc Thiessen<\/a>. Trump has justified every conservative who voted for him for the sake of the courts. He has named three sound justices, where a President Hillary Clinton would have pushed the Supreme Court the opposite way. Democrats\u2019 high-court picks always lean left, but so have many named by Republicans: \u201cSo Democrats have a perfect record on recent Supreme Court app<\/a>ointments, while Republicans were not even batting .500 \u2014 until Trump came along.\u201d In short, he \u201chas produced a court that will protect our freedoms for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: The Nation\u2019s Survival Is at Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe year 2020 has brought enormous challenges, and the question now is whether our reformist spirit is up to the task,\u201d warns Matt Purple at Spectator USA<\/a>. \u201cYet there is hope.\u201d Considering our past \u2014 our wars, riots, labor unrest, assassinations, crime \u2014 \u201c2020 looks less like a violent departure than a return to form.\u201d America\u2019s problems aren\u2019t \u201cunprecedented in her history,\u201d nor unique among nations today. Her \u201cwould-be challengers are relatively weak\u201d; the only two exceptions are Russia and China, but \u201cneither poses the threat of, say, a Soviet Union.\u201d Yes, that still leaves the question of whether we can remain strong \u201cinternally.\u201d Fact is, \u201cthe United States could very well fall.\u201d But \u201cthat doesn\u2019t mean it has to.\u201d Ultimately, he concludes, it\u2019s \u201cup to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freelancer: Hey, Lawmakers \u2014 Leave Us Alone<\/strong><\/p>\n

A California law forcing companies to hire more people as employees, with benefits, rather than as independent contractors, instead led to \u201cthousands\u201d of contractors who simply \u201clost work,\u201d fumes freelancer Kim Kavin at Reason<\/a>. Yet Joe Biden is vowing to pass a federal version of that law. \u00adResearch shows most contractors \u201cprefer contract work to traditional jobs,\u201d but \u201canti-contractor crusaders\u201d simply treat them as \u201cinvisible.\u201d In fact, the pandemic has made Kavin \u201cmore grateful than ever\u201d to be a freelancer: She is her \u201cown boss,\u201d no one can force her into an unsafe situation and she has \u201cmultiple streams of income\u201d \u2014 and, yes, health insurance. At a recent hearing on a similar law proposed for New Jersey, contractors \u2014 many of them truckers \u2014 filled the room. Like her, Kavin says, they just wanted lawmakers \u201cto leave them alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taibbi: The \u2018Russian Disinformation\u2019 Hoax<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some major news<\/a> outlets have dismissed The Post\u2019s Hunter Biden story as \u201cforeign propaganda\u201d without any evidence, laments Matt Taibbi in his newsletter<\/a>, citing some of the \u201ccreative methods\u201d used to promote Russian-conspiracy theories. Some, such as Rep. Adam Schiff and a number of former intel officials, pretend to have inside information. Others cling to flimsy reports that \u201cauthorities are investigating if it might be Russian disinformation.\u201d Journalists have been \u201cblasted as accomplices to foreign disinformation plots\u201d for asking valid questions about the story, even though the Biden campaign \u201ccan\u2019t say for sure if it\u2019s disinformation at all.\u201d A foreign element to the story is still possible, admits Taibbi, but the lack of concrete evidence has \u201cforced the press to levitate\u201d claims through \u201cpropaganda spin cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n

2020 watch: The Prez Is Not America\u2019s Dad<\/strong><\/p>\n

At National Review, Cameron Hilditch takes on<\/a> a particularly pernicious case for voting for President Trump: the idea that \u201ca great leader functions as a father to the nation.\u201d In reality, \u201cfew sentiments could possibly be more fascistic or less American than this one,\u201d which \u201cimplies a whole host of analogous rights and responsibilities.\u201d For one: \u201cFathers traditionally make the rules of the household . . . Presidents do not \u2014 they enforce laws that others pass.\u201d And: \u201cFathers treat their children as obedient dependents, which is a diametrically opposite role to the one that Americans have taken up ever since they spilled Papa George\u2019s tea all over Boston Harbor. Our forefathers brought this country into being precisely by behaving like disobedient independents, who do not general<\/a>ly make good children.\u201d<\/p>\n
