“#David Letterman Almost Killed Regis Philbin The Day Before His Live Retirement!

\nRegis Philbin<\/strong> sadly passed away earlier this year \u2014 but app<\/a>arently, he almost died nearly a decade ago because of David Letterman<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

On Wednesday\u2019s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>, the former late night star recalled having the daytime TV legend as a guest on Late Show With David Letterman<\/em> the night before he retired from Live! With Regis and Kelly<\/em> in 2011.<\/p>\n

The comedia<\/a>n explained that while deciding what kind of present to get Regis to celebrate his retirement, one of his staffers suggested a Rascal Scooter<\/strong> as \u201ca joke about how old and feeble\u201d he is. However, Letterman had a better idea \u2014 or so he thought.<\/p>\n

He recalled:<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018No, no. Let\u2019s not give Regis a Rascal Scooter. Let\u2019s give him an actual scooter, like a Vespa<\/strong>. Everybody knows how to ride a motor scooter.\u2019 \u2026 So that\u2019s what we decided to do. [We said,] \u2018Regis, we\u2019re so excited. We\u2019re sorry you\u2019re retiring, but to commemorate the evening and your last show tomorrow, we\u2019re giving you this beautiful, brand-new Vespa scooter.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Y\u2019all know where this is going\u2026<\/p>\n

The CBS<\/strong> program had the TV icon ride the scooter on-camera, right outside of the studio. After he waved goodbye, however, Regis took a harsh tumble to the ground. Ouch!<\/p>\n

Although Regis was fortunately uninjured, Letterman confessed that the stunt could have gone even worse, recalling with a laugh:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe could have been killed. He actually could have been killed. The last night before he retires he comes over, and I kill him \u2026 Nobody checked him out on it, because the assumption was, A, anybody can ride a scooter. And B, certainly Regis will ride a scooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ultimately, Lettermen decided to drive and whisk Philbin away on the scooter himself. Probably a good call there!<\/p>\n

Letterman went on to gush over the late legend\u2019s enthusiasm for entertaining the masses, telling Kimmel:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never said no. He often would do things that we didn\u2019t want him to do. He showed up once dressed as Shrek. I\u2019m not sure he knew why, but there he was in his Shrek outfit. But I was unimpressed. I mean, there are guys in show business who need the costume to stay in business. Regis was not one of them. He would do anything. He would come and be on the show and you could call him later and say, \u2018Regis, your makeup was lousy. Can you come back? We\u2019re going to do the whole show over.\u2019 And he\u2019d put on his suit and he would come back\u2026 Tremendous individual\u2026 a great heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
