\n Praise Rip Taylor! Camp is alive and well.<\/p>\n

Fun had been on life support in the horror genre for a few years as films became more social<\/a>ly conscious after \u201cGet Out\u201d exploded, and others grew paralyzingly scary. But there are still writers and directors out there who like to lather in the genre\u2019s natural insanity.<\/p>\n

Writer-director Justin Simien is one. His demented film \u201cBad Hair\u201d is about, of all things, a killer weave. Before you search \u201cweave\u201d to see if there is an alternate definition you were heretofore not aware of, know that I indeed mean hair sewn onto a woman\u2019s existing mop. The style is often associated with black women, who can achieve longer locks with it.<\/p>\n

Weaves do not frequently play a role in homicides. Until today.<\/p>\n

Simien\u2019s strange story is set in the late \u201880s, when a hungry young LA professional named Anna (Elle Lorraine) takes a job at a music TV station meant for black audiences called Culture. After a successful interview, boss Zora (Vanessa Williams) gives her a quizzical look. \u201cAnna, who does your hair?,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you went to an interview at any other building in town, you wouldn\u2019t get past reception.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zora, played by Williams at her Williamsest, sends Anna to Virgie\u2019s Salon, where a seemingly possessed stylist played by Laverne Cox excruciatingly installs her new \u2018do. Channeling the barbaric barber of \u201cSweeney Todd,\u201d Simien gives us his scariest scene. Anna\u2019s hair is harshly tugged and braided, and she bleeds as though she\u2019s on an operating table. It\u2019ll make you cancel your salon app<\/a>ointment.<\/p>\n

Back at Culture, suddenly everybody is trip<\/a>ping over themselves to be nearer to her. However, Anna\u2019s improved reputation is a result of a deal with the devil: Her shiny new hair starts to snake out like Medusa\u2019s and kill helpless victims.<\/p>\n

The film isn\u2019t all fun and bangs. The message in Simien\u2019s madness is that black women sometimes adopt the qualities of white women to climb the corporate ladder, and does that come at a cost? Simien never lets the seriousness vanquish the wacko developments, though. And as Lorraine deftly evolves Anna from a demure job-seeker to a lethal vixen, the film \u2014 which also stars Lena Waithe, Usher, Jay Pharoah and (where\u2019ve you been?) James Van Der Beek \u2014 becomes a blood-soaked \u201cStepford Wives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBad Hair\u201d is about 10 minutes too long. You don\u2019t salivate over Anna\u2019s home life as much as you do her office from hell, and a few of those scenes could have been trimmed. Nonetheless, it\u2019s nice to see horror let its hair down again.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
