The Uncharted<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0movie was delayed so many times that we started to think it was never going to get made. Now, after beginning production in March,\u00a0Uncharted<\/em> has wrapped filming, which means we\u2019re one step closer to seeing Tom Holland<\/strong> as baby Nathan Drake and\u00a0Mark Wahlberg<\/strong> as poorly-cast Sully. The\u00a0Ruben Fleischer<\/strong>-directed flick is meant to serve as a prequel to the popular game<\/a> series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nOver the summer, Forbes<\/a> writer\u00a0Scott Mendelson wrote an excellent article about how Hollywood keeps making the same mistake when it comes to adapting popular IP. That is, rather than just give fans what they want \u2013 a proper adaptation! \u2013 producers keep making prequels. Scott\u2019s latest example was for Disney\u2019s already-forgotten\u00a0Artemis Foul<\/em> adaptation, but we\u2019ve seen this trend again and again: a big-budget movie adapts a popular property, but the entire movie is spent setting up a sequel. And the\u00a0sequel \u2013\u00a0<\/em>which usually never even gets made because the first film underperforms \u2013\u00a0is the movie that\u2019s going to be the\u00a0real<\/em> adaptation. Or, as Scott put it:<\/p>\n

If you want to tell the origin, you still better make damn sure to give the audience the thing they came to see in the first movie. If you spend the entire running time setting up the familiar status quo with an \u201cOkay folks, the pieces are in place, you\u2019ll get the movie you wanted this time next time!\u201d tease, you\u2019ll fail every single time\u2026Think Ridley Scott\u2019s\u00a0Robin Hood,\u00a0<\/em>which spent the entire 140-minute running time turning Russell Crowe\u2019s Robin Hood into the outlaw we know and love. Think\u00a0Warcraft<\/em>, which was a feature-length prequel for the stories made popular in the video game series. Even Elizabeth Banks\u2019\u00a0Charlie\u2019s Angels\u00a0<\/em>takes the whole movie to induct a third member onto the team. It ends on a \u201chere\u2019s a bunch of adventures involving our title trio (Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska) which you didn\u2019t get to see\u201d montage. Not a single one of these films got a sequel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Why am I bringing this up in a story about\u00a0Uncharted<\/em> wrapping production? Because it looks like the\u00a0Uncharted<\/em> movie is doing the same. Exact. Thing. This won\u2019t be an adaptation of the games that so many people love, oh no. Instead, it\u2019s a\u00a0prequel<\/em> to the games, introducing us to a young Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and a young Sully (Mark Wahlberg) as they begin their treasure-hunting adventures. And while I have no insider knowledge here, I\u2019m 99.9% sure this movie is going to end with a set-up for a sequel that will be the\u00a0real<\/em> adaptation of\u00a0Uncharted<\/em> that everyone wanted to begin with. Call it a hunch.<\/p>\n

Anyway,\u00a0Uncharted<\/em> is done filming. It opens\u00a0July 16, 2021<\/strong>.
