Peele will produce the\u00a0<em>People Under the Stairs<\/em> remake for Universal, and while some Wes Craven fans may initially be resistant to such an idea, the fact of the matter is that the original\u00a0<em>People Under the Stairs<\/em> is a movie with good ideas and poor execution. There\u2019s room for improvement.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The People Under The Stairs Official Trailer #1 (1991) Wes Craven\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aIH9uDZ99c8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->Jordan Peele is setting his sights on\u00a0<em>The People Under the Stairs<\/em>, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/jordan-peele-people-under-the-stairs-remake\/?utm_campaign=collidersocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=twitter\">Collider<\/a>. Peele will produce a\u00a0<em>People Under the Stairs<\/em> remake with Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions. Peele is not expected to direct \u2013 which is a bummer, since I\u2019d love to see him tackle this material. But while he\u2019s not going to direct there\u2019s always a chance he\u2019ll take part in the screenplay, as he did with Nia DaCosta\u2019s\u00a0<em>Candyman<\/em> reboot.<\/p>\n<p>Peele has spoken about\u00a0<em>People Under the Stairs\u00a0<\/em>before. In an interview in the excellent documentary <em>Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror<\/em>, Peele says: \u201cOne of the things that movie really captures is black fear of white spaces.\u201d And in an interview with the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2017\/02\/14\/get-outs-jordan-peele-brings-the-social-thriller-to-bam\/\"><em>Village Voice<\/em><\/a>, Peele said: \u201c<em>People Under the Stairs<\/em> represents, whether intentionally or not, a certain fear of what goes on behind closed doors in white homes. And it also <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches the notion of enslavement of the people they\u2019ve got hidden under the stairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the original film, a young Black boy nicknamed Fool and two adult thieves break into a house owned by a white couple, the Robesons, played by\u00a0<em>Twin Peaks<\/em> stars\u00a0Everett McGill and Wendy Robie. Once inside, Fool discovers the Robesons are out of their god damn minds. They treat their daughter as a virtual prisoner, and they have a group of cannibal \u201cchildren\u201d locked up in the walls. It\u2019s a very weird movie with a constantly shifting tone, but it also has its moments. For one thing, the film is a satirical look at the Reagan era, with the homicidal couple serving as stand-ins for Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Which makes me wonder: will the remake take a similar approach, but take aim at the Trump era instead? Are the Robesons about to go from Reagan stand-ins to Trump stand-ins? Talk about terrifying.<\/p>\n<p>As I said above, the original has some great ideas but the execution is a bit messy, so I\u2019m very interested in a remake.
