\n A Catholic chaplain at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a> has resigned after sending an email saying George Floyd \u201chad not lived a virtuous life,\u201d church officials said.<\/p>\n

Rev. Daniel Patrick Moloney, who has reportedly served as MIT\u2019s chaplain since 2015, agreed to resign following the \u201cpersonal opinions\u201d he shared on Floyd\u2019s death in a June 7 email to the university\u2019s Catholic community, officials from the Archdiocese of Boston said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Fr. Moloney\u2019s comments should not reflect on the entirety of his priestly ministry, they nonetheless were wrong and by his resignation he accepts the hurt they have caused,\u201d archdiocese officials said.<\/p>\n

Moloney, who agreed to step down two days after sending the email, said that while the 46-year-old Floyd should not have been killed in police custody, \u201che had not lived a virtuous life,\u201d the Boston Globe reports.<\/p>\n

Moloney also questioned whether Floyd\u2019s death \u2014 which was caught on video, showing former Officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, pressing his knee into the handcuffed, black man\u2019s neck for nearly nine minutes \u2014\u00a0was the result of racial prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death, most people in the country have framed this as an act of racism,\u201d Moloney\u2019s email continued. \u201cI don\u2019t think we know that. Many people have claimed that racism is a major problem in police forces. I don\u2019t think we know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police officers \u201cdeal with dangerous people and bad people all the time, and that often hardens them,\u201d his email said.<\/p>\n

MIT\u2019s Catholic community and university alumni alerted archdiocese officials to Moloney\u2019s message, archdiocese spokesman Terrence Donilon told the Globe.<\/p>\n

Suzy Nelson, a vice president at MIT and dean for student life, characterized Moloney\u2019s message as \u201cdeeply disturbing\u201d in an email to students Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy devaluing and disparaging George Floyd\u2019s character, Father Moloney\u2019s message failed to acknowledge the dignity of each human being and the devastating impact of systemic racism,\u201d Nelson wrote.<\/p>\n

Moloney, meanwhile, said Tuesday he didn\u2019t intend to \u201churt anybody\u201d with his email.<\/p>\n

\u201cI regret what happ<\/a>ened, I regret it was misunderstood, I regret that [it] became difficult for me to be a voice for Christ on campus,\u201d Moloney told the Globe. \u201cThe whole thing went down in a way that I wish were otherwise.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
