\n Sacramento twin girls who were born conjoined at the head were successfully separated in an extensive, day-long surgical procedure Friday.<\/p>\n

Nine-month-old Abigail and Micaela Bachinskiy underwent a 24-hour surgery at UC Davis Medical Center and were successfully separated in the early hours of Friday morning reports KCRA3<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The joining of the little girls\u2019 skulls and brains, a congenital condition known as craniopagus twinning, is a \u201d very, very rare anomaly,\u201d UC Davis Children\u2019s Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgeon, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are very few children born in any one year worldwide that have this anomaly, and of those, there\u2019s only a much smaller subset that the anatomy is fortuitous enough to be able to attempt a separation \u2014 and hopefully come out with two healthy babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abigail and Micaela\u2019s mother found out that the twins were joined 11 weeks into her pregnancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very tough. I just was shocked. I couldn\u2019t process,\u201d Liliya Miroshnik\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve spent a lot of time \u2014 five months \u2014 studying this from all different ways,\u201d explained Dr. Edwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made 3D models. We\u2019ve looked at some form of altered reality, virtual reality, augmented reality to help us understand the anatomy better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors at UC Davis underwent repeated trial runs to make sure that they were prepared for the complicated procedure.<\/p>\n

Surgery began on October 23 and wrapp<\/a>ed up with the successful separation on October 24 around 3:28 a.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter 10 months of preparation, we were witnessing what we had all envisioned for the girls and we were overcome with emotion and joy,\u201d Aida Benitez, a nurse who watched the surgery team, said to ABC10<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will never see 3:28 on a clock again and not think of the moment that Abi and Mica became two separate babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Michael Edwards described the separation as a \u201clandmark surgery for the UC Davis Children\u2019s Hospital.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
