\nThe Pitch: <\/strong>John Carpenter accidentally invents the American slasher movie by making a low-budget fright-flick where a guy in a William Shatner mask terrorizes teens.<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Quarantine Viewing: <\/strong>Look at today\u2019s date.<\/p>\n

No one could\u2019ve predicted that\u00a0Halloween<\/em><\/strong>, which had a script<\/a> initially called\u00a0The Babysitter Murders<\/em>, would turn out to become a piece of iconic horror. The type of movie that would spawn numerous sequels, countless imitators, and create a trend. The bare-bones for the slasher movie as we know were around before John Carpenter<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Halloween<\/em>, but it was Carpenter\u2019s 1978 film that really broke the mold and created the formula that so many others would copy.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s oh so simple. When you step back and look at\u00a0Halloween<\/em>, there\u2019s not a lot to it. And yet, Carpenter and co-writer Debra Hill<\/strong> were able to craft something terrifying. Sure,\u00a0Halloween<\/em> might not be as scary today as it was in \u201978, but it\u2019s still damn effective. And imagine seeing this thing for the first time that year. Roger Ebert put it best in his review<\/a> at the time of release: \u201cHalloween<\/em> is a visceral experience \u2014 we aren\u2019t seeing the movie, we\u2019re having it happen to us. It\u2019s frightening. Maybe you don\u2019t like movies that are really scary: Then don\u2019t see this one.\u201d
