“#’SNL’ basically endorses Joe Biden in pre-election episode<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The final episode of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d before Tuesday\u2019s presidential election went much further than the show did in 2016.<\/p>\n

Playing Hillary Clinton four years ago, Kate McKinnon looked at the audience and said, \u201cWe can\u2019t tell you who to vote for, but on Tuesday, we all get a chance to choose what kind of country we wanna live in.\u201d Vague enough, right?<\/p>\n

Well, this week was a hell of a lot more specific than that.<\/p>\n

As former Vice President Joe Biden, Jim Carrey took on a Halloween theme<\/a> during the cold open and read a parody version of Edgar Allan Poe\u2019s \u201cThe Raven.\u201d<\/p>\n

The satirical poem ended thusly: \u201cThis daylight savings time, let\u2019s gain an hour and lose a president!\u201d<\/p>\n

Can\u2019t get much more explicit than that.<\/p>\n

Alec Baldwin\u2019s President Trump didn\u2019t appear for a rebuttal, but Maya Rudolph\u2019s Kamala Harris did and, in a throwback, McKinnon\u2019s Hillary showed up.<\/p>\n

It was a logical, if un-entertaining, end to more than a month of mostly clunker sketches sending up Biden and President Trump in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election. There is one more episode next week, but it\u2019s safe to say that whether Trump or Biden wins, it won\u2019t be funny. At the end of last cycle, McKinnon\u2019s Hillary sang a mournful version of Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah.\u201d Side-splitting.<\/p>\n

The Poe sequence had nobody ravin\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to take your minds off the election by reading a scary story,\u201d Carrey\u2019s Biden began. \u201cOnce upon a midnight dreary, while Trump retweeted QAnon theories.\u201d That, if you can believe it, was the funniest rhyme of the sketch.<\/p>\n

The rest were belabored groaners.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill I will win, \u2018cause I\u2019m a baller,\u201d Carrey said, failing to make the Joe Cool gag work yet again. \u201cJust ask my running mate, Kamal-er.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rudolph\u2019s Harris tried to sell a joke that in mispronouncing her name, Biden is cutely out-of-touch, but the audience was too busy rolling its eyes at the previous line to notice.<\/p>\n

The Raven in this instance was Clinton. McKinnon shuffled in wearing a cape to warn Biden about her crash-and-burn run four years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuoth the Clinton,\u201d he said. To which McKinnon added, \u201cWe lost before!\u201d<\/p>\n

But then Season 46\u2019s low-key MVP arrived. Not enough praise is heaped on regular cast member Beck Bennett for his phenomenal takes on politicians this year. \u201cSNL\u201d tends to get too caught up in exciting celebrity stars rather than celebrating the mega talents of its own cast.<\/p>\n

Bennett, who has previously played a hysterical, vampiric Mike Pence, this time took on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.<\/p>\n

The actor walked out with a Madame Tussauds-worthy face and bandaged purple hands, making reference to the senator\u2019s mysterious recent change in appearance.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, God. What happened to your hands, lobster boy,\u201d chimed in Carrey with a dumb line.<\/p>\n

Then Bennett jumped in and saved it: \u201cThis is a very common condition called Old Man Purple,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL\u201d tried to make a splash this year by having an A-lister like Carrey join the show\u2019s most frequent host, Baldwin, to make headline-grabbing election sketches. It worked! But for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

The reliance on big names only showed who the real stars are here: the sketch comedy\u2019s cast of seasoned improvisers and comedia<\/a>ns. Regardless of what happens Tuesday, in four years, lose the celeb drop-ins and use the \u201cNot Ready for Prime Time Players.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
