I bet you thought Halloween was over just because it\u2019s November now. Wrong. Halloween is something you carry in your heart year-round. So keep the horror floodgates open. Because this month is jam-packed with haunted houses, wistful witches, and degenerate daddies (oh my!)<\/p>\n<p>Yes, much like a seemingly felled slasher villain, the horror genre will not go quietly from streaming services just because the jack o\u2019 lanterns are starting to rot. Two-hundred years later, her dutiful (if degenerate) paramour in tow, Asa dusts the ash off her shoulders and kicks off her evil plan, which starts with possessing her doppelg\u00e4nger descendent.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hey, look: if puritans shoved your face into a mask full of spikes, you\u2019d be pretty angry too. Loosely based on Nikolai Gogol\u2019s 19th-century short story <em>Viy, <\/em>don\u2019t let <em><strong>Black Sunday<\/strong><\/em>\u2018s age fool you. This is one of the most auspicious directorial debuts in genre history<strong>. <\/strong>Truly, <strong>Mario Bava <\/strong>is a one-man-band. He didn\u2019t just serve as the film\u2019s director, but its co-writer, cinematographer, and special effects artist. The mesmerizing performance from scream queen <strong>Barbara Steele<\/strong>, as the wild-eyed witch Asa, is the icing on the cake. <\/p>\n<p><em>Black Sunday<\/em> is part of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shudder.com\/\">Shudder<\/a>\u2018s newest curation, which spotlights a killer laundry list of highlights from Bava\u2019s career. This is a rock-solid collection that does justice to an unimpeachable legacy and includes films that, in their totality, give a striking impression of Bava\u2019s work, from hook-handed giallos and vibrant anthologies to supernatural spookfests. Soon enough, the two \u201cyes and\u201d each other into a surreal and absolutely stomach-churning evening.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based on Ry\u016b Murakami\u2019s cult novel of the same name, <strong>Nicholas Pesce<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>Piercing<\/strong> <\/em>(2018) is eighty-one minutes of absolute depravity. And it rules. Precise, dream-like, and unexpectedly funny, <em>Piercing <\/em>is a love letter to the giallo genre that blends style, gore, pain, and pleasure to perfection. Did I mention this film has prog-rock legends Goblin on the soundtrack? <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re a big fan of wildly nasty but heart-forward films around these parts. One of his guests is Nell Lance, a disturbed woman who experienced poltergeist activity as a child. Reeling from the recent death of her mother, Nell\u2019s psyche was on the rocks long before she pulled up to the mansion\u2019s iron gate. Not even a blossoming \u201cfriendship\u201d with an enigmatic psychic can\u2019t save her soul from what the house has in store <\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are few ghost stories as brilliant, gothic, and spiraling as <strong>Robert Wise<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>The Haunting<\/strong><\/em> (1963). Even if you think early horror films aren\u2019t for you, I\u2019d encourage you to give this one a watch. Between the Panavision\u2019s agoraphobic 30mm lens, <strong>Julie Harris<\/strong>\u2018 performance, and the unbearably oppressive atmosphere, this is a classic you dare not skip.<\/p>\n<p>And now that it\u2019s a part of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.criterionchannel.com\/\">Criterion Channel<\/a>\u2018s incoming \u201cQueer Fear\u201d collection you simply have no excuse. This latest installment of the Queersighted program block promises to illuminate the darker corners of queer cinema, from low-key gothic lustings like <em>The Haunting<\/em> to camp vamp bangers like <em><strong>Daughters of Darkness<\/strong><\/em>, to modern-gay slow dives like <em><strong>Stranger By the Lake<\/strong><\/em>. Sure enough, the \u201crage\u201d leeches<\/em> <em>out from the research facility and begins to infect the whole of Britain. Slightly less than twenty-nine days after the fact, our hero Jim wakes up from a coma to find London in shambles. Banding together with a small group of survivors, Jim and company do their best to forge their way through the societal collapse. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Released in the year of our dark lord 2002, <strong>Danny Boyle<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>28 Days Later <\/strong><\/em>breathed new, homicidal life into the zombie genre. A delicious development, considering the film\u2019s origins are firmly planted in the realm of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction rather than horror (John Wyndham\u2019s 1951 novel <em>The Day of the Triffids<\/em>, to be specific). <strong>Cillian Murphy<\/strong>\u2018s dazed stroll through a deserted London has since sublimated into something positively iconic. A startling image of unthinkable devastation, loneliness, and panic. Unthinkable, that is, until 2020 kicked the door down with an apocalyptic \u201chard same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>28 Days Later <\/em>is an unbeatable adrenaline rush that, despite its early 21st century trappings, refuses to rot.
