The\u00a0Rupert Sanders<\/strong> adaptation of Tim O\u2019Brien\u2019s Vietnam War collection\u00a0The Things They Carried<\/em> <\/strong>has drafted an impressive cast.\u00a0Tye Sheridan<\/strong>, Tom Hardy<\/strong>, Stephan James<\/strong>, Bill Skarsgard<\/strong>, Pete Davidson<\/strong>, Ashton Sanders<\/strong>, Martin Sensmeier<\/strong>, Moises Arias<\/strong>, and Angus Cloud<\/strong> will star in the film, which follows the story of the men of Alpha Company during the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n

Deadline has the scoop on the pretty impressive\u00a0The Things They Carried<\/em> cast. Is this going to be the Vietnam-era\u00a0The Thin Red Line<\/em>, at least in terms of recognizable faces? We\u2019ll see. As Deadline adds, the casting process isn\u2019t over yet, so there are more names to come. Rupert Sanders is helming the pic with a script<\/a> from\u00a0Scott B. Smith, who wrote the excellent screenplay adaptation for his novel\u00a0A Simple Plan<\/em>, and the not-so-excellent screenplay adaptation for his novel\u00a0The Ruins<\/em> (the book version is vastly superior).
\nThe Things They Carried<\/em> will be produced by Tom Hardy\u2019s\u00a0Hardy Son & Baker, along with Dean Baker. David Zander (Spring Breakers<\/em>) is also producing, which Amy T. Hu serves as executive producer. Published in 1990,\u00a0The Things They Carried\u00a0<\/em>blends fact and fiction based on author Tim O\u2019Brien\u2019s experiences as a soldier in the\u00a023rd Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Here\u2019s a synopsis:<\/p>\n

The protagonist, who is named Tim O\u2019Brien, begins by describing an event that occurred in the middle of his Vietnam experience. \u201cThe Things They Carried\u201d catalogs the variety of things his fellow soldiers in the Alpha Company brought on their missions. Several of these things are intangible, including guilt and fear, while others are specific physical objects, including matches, morphine, M-16<\/span>\u00a0rifles, and M&M\u2019s candy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cTim O\u2019Brien\u2019s\u00a0The Things They Carried<\/em>\u00a0is his seminal masterwork \u2013 a raw, unflinching, and emotionally truthful literary experience filtered through a kaleidoscope of memory that\u2019s impossible not to be profoundly moved by,\u201d said Hardy and Baker. \u201cWe are all deeply passionate about and honoured to have the good fortune of working alongside Tim in bringing his vital classic to screen \u2013 and together with our incredible cast, Rupert, Scott, and David \u2013 we look forward to creating what we feel will be an important film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanders added: \u201cThe Things They Carried<\/em>\u00a0is a beautifully crafted work and one of the most viscerally evocative books I have ever read. For me, it transcends its subject of young men at war and explores the landscape of deep human emotions that reside within all of us. We live in such turbulent times, and the themes of love, fear, and mortality that Tim explored thirty years ago still resonate today, maybe even more powerfully. I am so excited about the cast we have put together \u2013 we have not seen this many young stars from different backgrounds sharing the screen since the days of\u00a0Platoon<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0The Outsiders.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n
