“#America Ferrera departs ‘Superstore’ for 100th episode<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n \u201cSuperstore\u201d marks two milestones Thursday night \u2014 its 100th episode and the departure of star America Ferrera.<\/p>\n

NBC announced in February that Ferrera, 36, was leaving after five seasons of playing Amy Sosa on the workplace sitcom, centered around Cloud 9, a\u00a0 big box store near St. Louis. Ferrera later tweeted that she wanted to \u201cstart the next chapter for my family and career.\u201d<\/p>\n

But due to the pandemic, \u201cSuperstore\u201d shuttered production on Season 5 with one episode to go \u2014 delaying Ferrera\u2019s exit until its two-part Season 6 opener, concluding Thursday at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe first heard about the possibility that [Ferrera] might be leaving and started to talk about two different paths [for Amy] as much as we could,\u201d says \u201cSuperstore\u201d showrunner Jonathan Green, who spoke to The Post along with showrunner Gabe Miller. \u201cWhen we\u00a0 found out she was definitely leaving we were able to choose one path we\u2019d talked about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica was such a huge part of the show and made amazing contributions in front of and behind the camera,\u201d says Miller. \u201cWe\u2019ve always had such a deep bench of strong actors and well-developed characters, so when we heard [Ferrera was leaving] we figured out how to adjust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last season was supposed to end with Amy moving to California with her boyfriend Jonah (co-star Ben Feldman) after accepting a job with Cloud 9\u2019s parent company, Zephra. The Oct. 29 season opener found the Cloud 9 team dealing with the early days of the pandemic; Thursday\u2019s episode will be devoted to Amy\u2019s goodbye.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Amy\u2019s last day in the store and all the employees are dealing with it in different ways, some better than others,\u201d says Greene.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlenn and Mateo [Mark McKinney, Nico Santos] are putting together a video goodbye for Amy that her fellow co-workers are all taking part in,\u201d says Miller. \u201cDina [Lauren Ash] has her own Dina-ish way of app<\/a>roaching the fact that her friend is moving away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Miller and Green say Ferrera, who\u2019d been on \u201cSuperstore\u201d since its 2015 premiere, had the show\u2019s best interests at heart when she decided to leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very important to America that the show keep going without her \u2014 she didn\u2019t want to be the reason it ended,\u201d says Green. \u201cAnd we didn\u2019t want to announce her departure until we had a Season 6 pickup. The relationships the cast has with each other are very strong. They\u2019re all really close, and we see this as an opportunity to go deeper with the other characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once Ferrera leaves, Feldman will take the lead role at Cloud 9.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Jonah came in, he was the new guy,\u201d says Miller. \u201cAt this point in Season 6, he\u2019s really sort of the grounded center of the show. He\u2019s one of the work family and has relationships with all the characters that go pretty deep. He\u2019s stepping up and looking for a little more responsibility in the store and trying to become more of a leader in certain ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing Ben has always been really skilled at is getting comedy from reacting to the craziness around him,\u201d says Green. \u201cSometimes we can go to a reaction shot, or it\u2019s a look from him, and he knows how to make it funny. It\u2019s like his unsung skill.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve found ways to make Jonah the funny one in the story who\u2019s gotten carried away or is over-eager,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re going to see him being overly careful about trying to do the right thing in certain situations and be self-conscious about how he\u2019s coming off \u2014 which leads to comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Ferrera is leaving \u201cSuperstore,\u201d Green and Miller say there\u2019s a chance viewers could see her reappear down the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the nice thing about having [Amy] leave to go to work for a corporation that\u2019s organically in the world of the show,\u201d Green says. \u201cWe hope we\u2019re leaving the door open to see her again.\u201d<\/p>\n
