\n \u201cI\u2019m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him for a divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sums up actor Hugh Grant\u2019s take on the fate of the star-crossed characters in his 1999 rom-com \u201cNotting Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the movie, opposites attract as radiant global superstar Anna Scott, played by Julia Roberts, nonsensically falls for nebbish London bookstore owner William Thacker (Grant). Tabloid troubles ensue.<\/p>\n

But in a recent interview with Collider, Grant \u2014 the king of romantic comedies including \u201cLove Actually\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones\u2019s Diary\u201d \u2014 predicted a less-than-happy ending<\/a> for the couple. (By the way \u2014 spoiler alert<\/em> \u2014 the eventually married parents-to-be are last spied in the film gauzily reclining on a park bench following a tumultuous courtship, as Elvis Costello croons the lyrics to his wistful song \u201cShe.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure that my character in \u2018Notting Hill\u2019 and Julia Roberts\u2019 character have been through the ugliest imaginable divorce with really expensive, nasty lawyers,\u201d Grant told Collider, while also noting that his other rom-com relationships were, in his opinion, \u201call disasters,\u201d too.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose films were all lies,\u201d he said, dissing the cheesy film category. He added that he thought a genre of sequels taking down romantic comedies would be \u201ca brilliant idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 60-year-old Grant \u2014 who has been promoting his new HBO murder mystery series<\/a> \u201cThe Undoing,\u201d co-starring Nicole Kidman \u2014 went even further in a series of network interviews released on Twitter<\/a> last week. He deadpanned that he would actually like<\/a> to do a sequel to \u201cNotting Hill\u201d that focuses on the \u201chideous divorce that\u2019s ensued.\u201d It would include \u201cchildren involved in tug of love, floods of tears, psychologically scarred forever,\u201d he said, with an oddly knowing chuckle. \u201cI\u2019d love to do that film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant has juggled his own tabloid relationship troubles over the years \u2014 including a scandalous breakup with longtime love Elizabeth Hurley, now 55, in 2000, five years after he cheated on her with a prostitute in Hollywood. But he avoided becoming \u201ca sad, lonely old man\u201d in 2018 when he married girlfriend Anna Eberstein<\/a>, with whom he is raising three children. (He also has<\/a> two other children from a \u201cfleeting affair\u201d with an ex, Tinglan Hong.)<\/p>\n

HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Undoing\u201d follows Dr. Jonathan Fraser, an oncologist who cheats on his therapist wife, Grace (Kidman), with a patient\u2019s spouse and comes under suspicion when said lover, Elena (Matilda De Angelis), is murdered. The limited series airs at 9 p.m. Sundays.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
