For the past few months, Larochelle has struggled with falling \u2014 and staying \u2014 asleep. She joins a horde of zzzzz-free zombies around the world who have been starved for a restful night since the coronavirus pandemic started.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, 22% of people say that their sleep quality is worse because of the COVID-19 crisis, according to a survey done by SleepHelp.org.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere around the globe, researchers also are harping on this nighttime uprising. One study published in April by the Journal of Critical Sleep Medicine found that insomnia and its symptoms drastically increased for COVID-19-free participants in China, the first epicenter of the disease, from January to February of this year.<\/p>\n<p>In Italy, another major coronavirus hot spot, reports of decreased sleep increased more than 12% from February to March as the second week of lockdown kicked in, according to a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research.<\/p>\n<p>Although the data suggests the world is having a sleep crisis, Dr. Alcibiades Rodriguez, the director of the sleep center at NYU Langone, says that we actually have an anxiety problem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15851599\"><img alt=\"One expert says avoiding \"bad news\" at night could help with insomnia.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>One expert says avoiding \u201cbad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>\u201d at night could help with insomnia.<\/span><span>Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sleep_deprivation_depression\"><\/span>Sleep deprivation = depression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSleep is interconnected with mood and anxiety disorders,\u201d Dr. Rodriguez tells The Post. \u201cThis is an unprecedented situation. It\u2019s a high level of stress, especially in the middle of this in New York.\u201d Trouble sleeping is actually a symptom of anxiety and depression, which he says are on the rise because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We\u2019re] stressed about our health, about our family\u2019s health, the economy, our jobs,\u201d he says. Being isolated from our friends isn\u2019t helping. \u201cBesides that the quarantine, to be at home, can make you actually depressed. Human beings, we are social animals, and we need contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Larochelle\u2019s sleep has gotten even worse recently, as the Black Lives Matter movement continues in reaction to the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a black woman; I\u2019m extremely outraged at all that\u2019s going on. It\u2019s been very emotionally draining to read about all this stuff,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s so much work to do, and that\u2019s daunting. I was already very stressed seeing the number of deaths and the pandemic and being closed in, and to add on to experience all of this that\u2019s been going on, that\u2019s increased my stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018This is an unprecedented situation. It\u2019s a high level of stress, especially in the middle of this in New York.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nighttime is particularly tough for Larochelle because it lacks the easy distractions of the daytime. \u201cI can do work or watch a show or do something. At night is when I\u2019m alone with my thoughts,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a symptom of a mental health issue, sleep can be affected by a change in your daily routines, says Dr. Rodriguez. \u201cBeing confined at home can disrupt your circadian rhythm, the sleep-wake cycle,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work in New York City, but I live in Jersey, so I think having the commute, walking around more, that just tires you out without you really realizing it,\u201d says Larochelle. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m a lot more rested on a regular basis because [now] I can only go from my bedroom to my living room. I feel like I\u2019m not as tired at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lack of sleep will affect just about every part of your day, says Dr. Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll have tension, your concentration is decreased, your memory may be affected, you may be moody,\u201d he says. \u201cSuppose you have a medical condition, you have back pain or you suffer from migraines: You\u2019re going to feel worse. If you feel that way, it may lead to more anxiety and more depression; it\u2019s a vicious cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Larochelle says she hasn\u2019t noticed a strong change in her moods, her migraines and headaches have gotten worse.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tips_for_improving_your_sleep\"><\/span>Tips for improving your sleep<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Larochelle says she has cut out coffee and tried meditation apps to help her relax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhite noise works really well for me, so keeping my fan on or using a rain app \u2014 that works really well to hum me to sleep,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Larochelle also recently purchased melatonin sleep supplements to pick up where Benadryl couldn\u2019t help her.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dr. Rodriguez recommends consulting a doctor before starting a medicinal treatment. \u201cI have many patients that actually just need medication for anxiety. No sleep medication will control your anxiety,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rodriguez suggests creating established routines in order to help combat life\u2019s pressures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStress is something that we cannot control. Try to create some type of normalcy if you can,\u201d the doctor says. That should include going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggests squeezing in exercise, which is something you can control; socializing in one way or another, even via virtual gatherings on apps like Zoom; cutting out alcohol, especially right before bed; and avoiding anxiety-inducing \u201cbad news\u201d at night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose things are easier said than done,\u201d Dr. Rodriguez says. \u201cI\u2019m guilty of that sometimes. I don\u2019t do the best.\u201d But he says the key is to \u201ccontrol the little things in your world that you can control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And when other options fail, don\u2019t be afraid to seek professional help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re having trouble sleeping, consult your doctor.
