he says.<br \/>\nIn Bangkok&#8217;s network of canals, trash collectors pluck plastic bottles, bags and containers from the fetid waters.<br \/>\n&#8220;Plastic pollution may kill more people than (the coronavirus) in Thailand,&#8221; says 12-year-old environmentalist Ralyn &#8220;Lilly&#8221; Satidtanasarn, the kingdom&#8217;s answer to Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg.<br \/>\n<b>Plastic detox<\/b><br \/>\nThailand along with Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Vietnam produce half the plastic waste in the world&#8217;s oceans, according to campaign group the Ocean Conservancy.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2020\/inbangkokalo.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"In Bangkok alone, rubbish leapt by 62 percent in April\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2020\/inbangkokalo.jpg\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"In Bangkok alone, rubbish leapt by 62 percent in April\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800\/2020\/inbangkokalo.jpg\" title=\"In Bangkok alone, rubbish leapt by 62 percent in April\"><\/img><figcaption>\n                In Bangkok alone, rubbish leapt by 62 percent in April<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Over the last year all of those countries have pledged, or introduced, new rules to ban single-use plastic bags and other throwaway items.<br \/>\nThailand outlawed plastic bags in supermarkets and department stores in January.<br \/>\nBefore then Thais on average used eight bags a day, 12 times more than a resident of the European Union.<br \/>\nWhile the kingdom has weathered the virus well, with just over 3,100 cases and fewer than 60 deaths, fears of contracting it have seen single-use plastic return with a vengeance.<br \/>\nThe new normal comes with more plastic\u2014cutlery in sterilised bags and condiments in zip-lock sachets.<br \/>\n&#8220;A large part (of the extra plastic) will end up in the rivers and oceans,&#8221; warns Tara Buakamsri of Greenpeace Thailand.<br \/>\nHe says the crisis had &#8220;cruelly highlighted&#8221; the need for better waste management in a country where only about 19 percent of the two million tonnes of plastic waste produced last year was recycled.<\/p>\n<p>The government aims for 100 percent recyclable plastic to be in common use by 2027.<br \/>\nThe other big four Asian plastic polluters are yet to give comprehensive figures on plastic use during the virus.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2020\/thailandoutl.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Thailand outlawed plastic bags in supermarkets and department stores in January\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2020\/thailandoutl.jpg\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Thailand outlawed plastic bags in supermarkets and department stores in January\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800\/2020\/thailandoutl.jpg\" title=\"Thailand outlawed plastic bags in supermarkets and department stores in January\"><\/img><figcaption>\n                Thailand outlawed plastic bags in supermarkets and department stores in January<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But some cities in Japan have reported an increase in plastic waste, even though its citizens are better at recycling.<br \/>\nConcerned by Thailand&#8217;s enduring addiction to plastic, civil society is hoping to inspire a public detox.<br \/>\nIn northern Thailand, an academic is leading a team paving roads with plastic bags mixed with sand.<br \/>\nThe composite slabs are lighter to transport and can last up to 400 years before decomposing, says Wechsawan Lakas of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University.<br \/>\nHis inspiration to find an alternative came after a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to the beach with his two young sons, who discovered waters bloated with plastic waste.<br \/>\nBut the small gains are outsized by the scale of the Thai plastics industry, he says, insisting greater political will is needed to alter both consumer habits and the sources of raw materials.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because of the power of the petrochemical industry it will be difficult for the government to implement aggressive policies,&#8221;
