Rather than buy an expensive PC or Console, you can subscribe to a service and stream high-end games to your tablet or weak PC. I tried out Amazon\u2019s take, called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/luna\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">Luna<\/a>, and a few hours is enough to say it needs more time to bake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That isn\u2019t to say the service is terrible so far, but it\u2019s not a competent gaming machine replacement\u2014at least not yet. But before I get ahead myself, here\u2019s the basic info about Luna you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Currently, you need an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/luna\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">invite to join Luna<\/a>, which is one sign of admission that Amazon knows the service isn\u2019t ready for everyone yet. Once you get an invite, you can sign up for a seven-day trial, and after that, it\u2019s $5.99 a month (though eventually, that price will go up).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Your money gets you access to 50 games in the Luna library, no need to pay extra. Optional sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion extras will net you extra games down the road, but the library is limited right now. Amazon mentioned\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Resident Evil 7<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as a lunch title, for instance, but it\u2019s not in my game list, so I couldn\u2019t test it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speaking of the game list, you won\u2019t find any of the latest AAA games here. Nor will you find any fighter games (ala\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Street Fighter<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) or online multiplayer. The limitations don\u2019t end there, you can\u2019t stream above 1080p currently, you can\u2019t play on Android, and you can subscribe to any of the upcoming channels yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_App_is_Pretty_Good\"><\/span>The App is Pretty Good<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59603\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-59603 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/bbc8d5552411e631547c1f5a7407c482\/p\/uploads\/2020\/11\/x06ae0d65.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.ONi7X3Fp02.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the Luna home screen\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-credittext=\"Amazon\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Amazon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I tested Luna on a Windows PC connected to fast internet, just to get the \u201cbest possible experience.\u201d Amazon says you need a minimum of 10 Mbps speed, without specifying if that\u2019s up, down, or (likely) both. With my setup, I get 800 Mbps down and 200 up, so I should be golden.<\/p>\n<p>The Luna App itself is well-thought-out and easy to navigate. A library button to the left gets you to a list of all the games available to play, and clicking on a game takes you to an informative splash page.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59604\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-59604 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/b6b32fe6a2f0f393b7d5c6d0467c9439\/p\/uploads\/2020\/11\/x56c65de4.jpg.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.Z5yooLOzYn.jpg\" alt=\"An internet speed test showing 820 mbps down and 200 up.\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">That should be fast enough.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re using a Bluetooth-connected controller, the Windows Luna app automatically detects it and starts using it. If you\u2019re using the Luna controller, you\u2019ll need to pair it through the mobile app. The Luna controller uses a Wi-Fi connection to directly contact Amazon\u2019s game servers to reduce latency and improve gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>I bring up the Luna controller here because the Luna app wants you to buy it. You\u2019ll find ads for the controller everywhere. It gets whole splash pages, and banner ads, and more. I don\u2019t have the Luna controller because you can\u2019t order it until you sign up for the service. That means you\u2019ll burn through at least two days of seven-day trial waiting for it.<\/p>\n<p>But overall, Amazon can get high-points for a good-looking, no-frills app that\u2019s easy to use.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lag_and_Latency_Oh_My\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lag and Latency Oh My<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59607\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-59607 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/thumbcache\/0\/0\/89838e914f13c314d607272722d782f1\/p\/uploads\/2020\/11\/x22f0b3cf.jpg.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.QDbMY4LurF.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot from the &quot;Grid&quot; racing game.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1050\" data-credittext=\"Amazon\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Amazon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So what\u2019s the problem with Luna? Well, beyond a rather lackluster selection of games, the actual gameplay is the problem right now. To be fair, when it works, it\u2019s amazing. But when it doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s frustrating. I don\u2019t have any experience with Stadia to compare, but the service should stand on its own regardless of competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I started with\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grid<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, figuring that the service is in real trouble if it can\u2019t get a simple racer down. And the first night went really well. The game loaded quickly, the graphics looked good (for\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grid<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in 1080p anyway), and I got through a few races with no problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Then I switched to\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Furi<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a game less graphically demanding but less forgiving of latency and lag. And that\u2019s when it fell apart.\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Furi<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0might be the closest thing to a fighter game on the list. It\u2019s an \u201caction shoot-em-up\u201d game that requires precise timing to dodge, attack, and counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I didn\u2019t get through the tutorial. The game itself experience lag, to the point that audio became overly digitized and hurt my ears. Even when it seemed to be running well, my button presses registered just a bit too slow. I tried to compensate, but I died\u2014multiple times\u2014in the tutorial level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was darn near unplayable; I gave up and shut down Luna for the night. Since then, I\u2019ve gone back to Grid and a few other games, and while I don\u2019t hit latency as much (and presumably the Luna controller will help), I do see lag frequently.\u00a0At other times, the the games played fine again. It\u2019s very uneven. And again, I have outstanding internet speeds, so the problem shouldn\u2019t be on my end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Give_it_a_Little_Longer_in_the_Oven\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Give it a Little Longer in the Oven<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This is just an early look at Luna. You won\u2019t find a review score here because we haven\u2019t spent enough time with it yet and Amazon is clearly still working on the service. But if you get an invite, and you\u2019re wondering if you should fork over your hard-earned money right now, the answer is \u201cmaybe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you\u2019re OK with a small list of games that aren\u2019t in the AAA category (<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Control\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being the closest), it\u2019s worth considering. When it works well, it shows a lot of potential. And if you want game streaming on your iPad, then it\u2019s the only option currently, that\u2019s a pretty good selling point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But if you\u2019re a hardcore gamer, you probably already own an expensive gaming PC or a gaming console, and right now, those provide a better experience. Some things are worth waiting for, and you should probably wait on Luna.
