\n Meet three guys who definitely don\u2019t<\/em> have \u201cThe Right Stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

They\u2019re Robert \u201cCap\u201d Caputo (John C. Reilly), Dr. Michael \u201cSkip\u201d Henai (Fred Armisen) and\u00a0 Professor Scott \u201cRook\u201d Sloan (Tim Heidecker), who bumble their way through \u201cMoonbase 8,\u201d a gentle, six-episode Showtime comedy co-written and directed by Jonathan Krisel (\u201cBaskets\u201d).<\/p>\n

The dim-bulb astronaut wannabes \u2014 who can\u2019t even agree on what the letters in NASA stand for \u2014 live together in a Moon Base Simulator in the Arizona desert while training to be the first men to colonize the moon.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re in for a bumpy ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese aren\u2019t obvious astronaut choices,\u201d says Krisel, 41. \u201cIt\u2019s the comedic trope of the loser who has big dreams. If you were being trained by NASA to live in a confined space, isolated with annoying people, these would be the three most annoyoing people you could use as a litmus test.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each man has a somewhat sketchy background: Caputo, who flew a tourist chopper in Honolulu, is a deadbeat dad and tax cheat; Henai idolizes his father, a groundbreaking NASA scientist, yet lives in his shadow; and Rook is an ex-groupie who followed progressive rock band Phish around the country, ingesting and smoking various illegal substances. He\u2019s now a born-again Christian with a litterfull of kids and a pregnant wife who\u2019s awfully chummy with their handsome pastor.<\/p>\n

Krisel, who\u2019s worked with Armisen and Heidecker for years on shows including \u201cPortlandia\u201d and \u201cTim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!,\u201d says there was no casting involved in \u201cMoonbase 8.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re four friends who wanted to do something and were like, \u2018Let\u2019s make it happen,\u2019 \u201d he says. \u201cIn our minds, [the series<\/a>] was going to be similar to \u2018Curb Your Enthusiasm,\u2019 getting funny people together with a loose outline of an episode \u2014 but then we script<\/a>ed it out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt such an extreme environment and really fun to come up with the episodes,\u201d he says of the Moon Base Simulator. \u201cIt\u2019s like \u2018Gilligan\u2019s Island\u2019 \u2014 \u2018Who\u2019s going to come this week?\u2019 The four of us really love classic comedy like The Three Stooges \u2026 and who better to do this than these guys, who are all masters of a very specific type of comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series was done on spec, with funding from A24, and then sold to Showtime, where it premieres Sunday at 11 p.m.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe filmed in a sand pit in Simi Valley \u2026 that was the closest thing to LA that looked like it was out in the middle of nowhere,\u201d Krisel says. \u201cIt was more like an indie-style project. The other idea was to keep it very low-budget; there are barely any actors in this, only two locations \u2014 inside and outside \u2014 and we could do whatever we wanted without breaking the bank \u2026 in a self-contained location, which was really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krisel says that he and Reilly, Heidecker and Armisen originally thought about setting \u201cMoonbase 8\u201d on Mars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Mars is a kind of new thing\u2019 \u2014 Elon Musk is trying to get there \u2014 but thought \u2026 that the moon is a little bit more romantic,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are songs about the moon; it\u2019s part of our lives. Mars is a foreign, weird planet that\u2019s kind of cool because we\u2019ve never been there, but the moon is in pop culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor these three dopes [the moon] is part of their childhood,\u201d he says. \u201cThey grew up on space and it still has that bluster to it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
