“#Ruth Wilson reveals she quit ‘The Affair’ because she ‘didn\u2019t feel safe’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Ruth Wilson has offered further insight into her abrupt 2018 departure from Showtime\u2019s hit series<\/a> \u201cThe Affair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old actress said she \u201cdidn\u2019t feel safe,\u201d according to the Wrap<\/a>, citing an interview<\/a> with UK-based Stylist Magazine published Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I haven\u2019t gone into \u2018The Affair\u2019 is that I haven\u2019t worked out how to discuss it. There\u2019s a lot of noise and anger surrounding it, and really the power rests with me to choose how I discuss my life and my experiences,\u201d Wilson said.\u00a0\u201cWhat\u2019s important to say is that I did speak up. I did have a voice. I did stand up for myself. There was a situation on \u2018The Affair,\u2019 where things didn\u2019t feel right, and I dealt with them, and I managed to protect myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of her exit from the show \u2014 which, as its name suggests, is about two sexual affairs \u2014 it was considered to be under mysterious circumstances. When asked why, she cited a non-disclosure agreement as preventing her from discussing it, The Post reported at the time.<\/p>\n

Then, in late 2019, a Hollywood Reporter<\/a> story reported crew member accounts of a \u201chostile work environment\u201d on the set regarding the handling of the show\u2019s nudity and sex scenes. Showrunner Sarah Treem responded with an op-ed<\/a> calling Wilson difficult and not apologizing.<\/p>\n

According to the Wrap, Wilson brought up the #MeToo movement when speaking about her exit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was before #MeToo and before Harvey Weinstein \u2014 and yet my instincts were very clear and strong about what I felt was wrong, about what was going on, and what I didn\u2019t feel safe about,\u201d she told Stylist, which has an abbreviated version of the story online.<\/p>\n

Wilson \u2014 who won a Golden Globe for her role in \u201cThe Affair\u201d \u2014 is starring in the TV adaption of the children\u2019s book trilogy \u201cHis Dark Materials.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI could tell, reading the book that it\u2019s a really iconic female role and there\u2019s lots of nuance to it,\u201d Wilson told Stylist of her role. \u201cIt\u2019s always fun playing baddies because you have to find the human side, too. The more awful they are, you have to also find the vulnerability. It\u2019s so complex, the relationship with her child, the need for ambition; it\u2019s relevant and complex at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n
