The battleground? The elevator, which has become high-stakes territory in the larger fight against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>New reduced-capacity rules\u00a0 \u2014 most buildings limit capacity to four riders at a time and require masks \u2014 are causing clashes: Some riders are refusing to let others enter the elevator with them, while others ignore the rules and pack the lifts.<\/p>\n<p>Wait times in the lobby and hallway are proving unbearable and, in some cases, long-suffering doormen have to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely awkward,\u201d Upper West Side chess instructor Evan Rabin told The Post, recalling a recent standoff in his 30-story building that was defused by the doorman.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old and another resident were both ejected from the elevator because Rabin insisted on joining the germaphobe demanding a solo ride.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16568336\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16568336 lazyload\" alt=\"The elevator sign at Shai Canaan's apartment building.\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>The elevator sign at Shai Canaan\u2019s apartment building<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Brian Zak\/NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I had to wait for the next one,\u201d said Rabin, who calmly pointed out the building\u2019s four-person elevator policy. \u201cI replied, \u2018If you\u2019re not comfortable, you have every right to leave, but I\u2019m in a rush.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each stood their ground until the exasperated doorman ordered them to quit arguing and give up the elevator to another tenant.<\/p>\n<p>On the opposite side of the park, an Upper East Side resident said her teenage daughter was screamed at by \u201csomeone\u2019s help\u201d for trying to keep her <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> distance.<\/p>\n<p>The 54-year-old stay-at-home mom, who prefers to keep her identity private because she fears retribution from her co-op board, said her daughter politely asked a housekeeper to take the next elevator when it stopped at a lower floor, saying that she only rides the elevator with family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe housekeeper yelled, \u2018I am not waiting. I have waited long enough. People just seem to have very little patience these days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question of whether elevators serve as outsize petri dishes is up for debate. It is clearly difficult to stand the obligatory 6 feet apart, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/how-to-catch-the-coronavirus-symptoms-not-long-does-it-take\/6414235\/#:~:text=%22I%20understand%20the%20anxiety%20is,'if'%20you%20take%20precautions.\">but, according to experts,<\/a> occupants wearing masks, coupled with the relatively short travel time, lessens the likelihood of the coronavirus spreading.<\/p>\n<p>Advice issued to those in shared housing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/shared-congregate-house\/guidance-shared-congregate-housing.html\">by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> includes the recommendation: \u201cConsider limiting the number of individuals in an elevator at one time.\u201d The authority also recommends they be cleaned and disinfected more than once a day.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not enough to reassure the likes of data analyst Lydia, a 42-year-old diabetic, who asked not to be fully named for privacy reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned that she\u2019s at higher risk than others for COVID-19, the Upper East Sider often ensures solo rides by saying: \u201cI have a disease!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One man jockeying to board once grunted, \u201cIs it contagious?,\u201d before agreeing to the request of the widowed mom of one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16568328\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img class=\"size-nypost-large-desktop-uncropped wp-image-16568328 lazyload\" alt=\"Carole Tashjian\" width=\"662\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=662 662w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/elevator-wars-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1324 1324w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 662px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span>Carole Tashjian<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Stefano Giovannini<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, math teacher Carole Tashjian, also of the Upper East Side, finds the tricky etiquette and long wait times particularly challenging. This is mostly because the three elevators in her residence close in rotation for maintenance work. Despite the inconvenience, the rule remains four riders at a time.<\/p>\n<p>A lone angry woman twice \u201cshooed\u201d the 59-year-old out of the elevator, saying, \u201cNo, no, no, you can\u2019t come on,\u201d because she wanted the space to herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was shocked the first time, so I stepped out,\u201d said Tashjian. \u201cBut, the second time, she was so nasty in her tone \u2014 I just barged in.
