\n Rhode Island is no longer the \u201csmallest state with the longest name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voters in the Ocean State, formerly known as \u201cRhode Island and Providence Plantations,\u201d app<\/a>roved a ballot measure to remove \u201cand Providence Plantations\u201d from the state\u2019s official name.<\/p>\n

The referendum was introduced in the state senate by Rhode Island\u2019s sole Black senator, Harold Metts, in the wake of the George Floyd protests earlier this year. At the time, Metts called the name \u201ca hurtful term to so many of us\u201d due to the word \u201cplantation\u201d and its connotations of slavery.<\/p>\n

Early results show that 52.9 percent of voters approved the change.<\/p>\n

Previous attempts<\/a> to change the state\u2019s name failed, including a 2010 referendum which was struck down by 78 percent of voters.<\/p>\n

Officials say they plan in the coming weeks to assess all state property in order to remove the words \u201cProvidence Plantations\u201d \u2013 including on the 116-year old State House\u2019s grand marble facade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order removing \u201cProvidence Plantations\u201d from all communications coming from the governor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Rhode Island\u2019s name change joins a growing list of other successful ballot measures this year, including legalized marijuana in five states and a new flag for Mississippi.<\/p>\n
