\n Warner Bros. has apologized about a character\u2019s depiction in the HBO Max movie \u201cThe Witches\u201d after backlash from people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Activists targeted the film \u2014 directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis (\u201cForrest Gump\u201d) \u2014 for playing up a \u201csplit hand\u201d on the Grand High Witch character, played by Anne Hathaway. On Monday, Paralympian Amy Marren called out<\/a> the movie on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease educate yourself on #LimbDifferences and the support the idea that you are #NotAWitch because you look different!\u201d she wrote. \u201cYou can also actively support the limb difference community by using words that describe us as PEOPLE, as it\u2019s not the difference that defines us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marren\u2019s remarks \u2014 as well as statements from other groups including the Paralympic Game<\/a>s, which tweeted that<\/a> \u201climb difference is not scary\u201d \u2014 prompted the response from Warner Bros.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe the filmmakers and Warner Bros. Pictures are deeply saddened to learn that our depiction of the fictional characters in \u2018The Witches\u2019 could upset people with disabilities and regret any offense caused,\u201d the studio said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn adapting the original story, we worked with designers and artists to come up with a new interpretation of the cat-like claws that are described in the book,\u201d the mea culpa continued. \u201cIt was never the intention for viewers to feel that the fantastical, non-human creatures were meant to represent them. This film is about the power of kindness and friendship. It is our hope that families and children can enjoy the film and embrace this empowering, love-filled theme<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nonprofit Lucky Fin Project<\/a> \u2014 whose Twitter bio says it aims \u201cto raise awareness, support and celebrate those born with symbrachydactyly or limb difference\u201d \u2014 also weighed in on the controversy, saying<\/a>, \u201cThe deliberate choice to make Anne Hathaway\u2019s character in the new @wbpictures film #TheWitches limb different in efforts to make her more creepy and sinister is upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Witches\u201d \u2014 which premiered Oct. 22 and also features Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth, Chris Rock and Jahzir Bruno \u2014 is a reimagining of the Roald Dahl book about a coven of witches, led by Hathaway\u2019s character. The screenplay was co-written by Zemeckis, \u201cblack-ish\u201d creator Kenya Barris and Guillermo del Toro.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
