\n Busta Rhymes has been a hip-hop heavyweight since the \u201990s, but these days he\u2019s feeling light on his feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was 340 pounds \u2014 and it was challenging as hell to come to terms with that \u2014 but I currently weigh 254 pounds, so I\u2019m almost down 100 pounds,\u201d said Rhymes, 48, who recently posted before and after pics of his body transformation<\/a> on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cI had the stomach that looked like I was nine months pregnant, and then I had the stomach with the six-pack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhymes has been New York rap royalty for decades \u2014 first as a member of Leaders of the New School and then as a solo star. Along the way, he\u2019s racked up 12 Grammy nominations while scoring hits such as \u201cWoo-Hah!! Got You All in Check,\u201d \u201cPut Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s It Gonna Be?!\u201d (featuring Janet Jackson).<\/p>\n

The latter track was a Top 5 single off of Rhymes\u2019 platinum 1998 album \u201cE.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front,\u201d and his new album arrives as a sequel 22 years later. But the Brooklyn-based MC (born Trevor George Smith Jr.) isn\u2019t the same Busta anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a lot more naive to certain things,\u201d he said. \u201cI definitely was a lot more uncomfortable with sharing my vulnerability. I would have never put out a song like \u2018Best I Can\u2019 back then, even though what I\u2019m talking about in \u2018Best I Can,\u2019 I was actually going through it [when I made] the first \u2018Extinction Level Event\u2019 album.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExtinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God\u201d is Rhymes\u2019 latest LP\u00a0 \u2014 his first since 2012\u2019s \u201cYear of the Dragon\u201d \u2014 and features an all-star array of guests, including Kendrick Lamar (\u201cLook Over Your Shoulder\u201d), Mary J. Blige (\u201cYou Will Never Find Another Me\u201d) and his \u201cI Know What You Want\u201d collaborator Mariah Carey (\u201cWhere I Belong\u201d). But perhaps the most surprising cameo comes from Minister Louis Farrakhan.<\/p>\n

Getting permission from Farrakhan to excerpt from one of his old interviews was a coup for Rhymes. \u201cThe way he spoke, it just cut me to my soul, and it [captured] what I was trying to create as a feeling of seriousness, especially in these times,\u201d he said. \u201cI just thought it was important that we spoke directly to it, and I also felt it was important who it was coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n

But rocking a social<\/a> consciousness is standard for Rhymes. \u201cIt\u2019s always been an important message to all of my albums,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why the names of my albums were \u2018The Coming\u2019 and \u2018When Disaster Strikes\u2019 and \u2018Anarchy\u2019 and \u2018It Ain\u2019t Safe No More.\u2019 This whole catalog of mine is really like a holy script<\/a>ure with different chapters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhymes turned the page on his weight struggle in March 2019, after he had a procedure to treat throat polyps and then attended Nipsey Hussle\u2019s<\/a> memorial in Los Angeles. After having those health problems and then mourning a rapper who died so young, he had a wake-up call. \u201cI said, \u2018If this is not the sign to get yourself together, I don\u2019t know what else will be,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cAnd at that point I made my decision to get my life together, and I immediately got into this transformation journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he didn\u2019t just make this \u201clifestyle change\u201d for himself \u2014 he also did it for his family, including six children: \u201cWhen you really sit back and you think about it, it\u2019s selfish \u2026 Why are you putting yourself in a situation when you can actually collapse and die, and you got all of these people that love you that you\u2019re responsible for? It was unfair to them \u2014 and unfair to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Rhymes \u2014 who credits Weight Watchers, Peloton and his personal trainers for getting him into shape \u2014 hopes that he will motivate others to bust some healthier new moves, too. \u201cIt\u2019s been a blessing to be able to see this through and be able to share it with people and inspire people,\u201d he said, \u201cbecause that\u2019s the goal at the end of the day for me.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
