{"id":106320,"date":"2020-11-05T23:37:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T20:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/dogs-can-detect-covid-19-quicker-better-than-nasal-swabs-study\/"},"modified":"2020-11-05T23:37:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-05T20:37:46","slug":"dogs-can-detect-covid-19-quicker-better-than-nasal-swabs-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/dogs-can-detect-covid-19-quicker-better-than-nasal-swabs-study\/","title":{"rendered":"#Dogs can detect COVID-19 quicker, better than nasal swabs: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Dogs can detect COVID-19 quicker, better than nasal swabs: study<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/Dog6.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        Dogs can detect COVID-19 in humans quicker and more accurately than the gold-standard nasal swab, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>A Finnish scientist, who\u2019s been testing the disease-detecting pups at Helsinki Airport, said her pooches identified a number of people who had the virus but had tested negative after taking polymerase chain reaction (PCR) nasal tests, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/sniffer-dogs-have-a-better-nose-for-covid-than-tests-vmqvzq7g3\">The Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Days after the dogs \u2014 Miina, K\u00f6ssi and Valo \u2014 diagnosed the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ers, the supposedly negative passengers started experiencing symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anna Hielm-Bj\u00f6rkman said this suggests pooches may be able to sniff out the virus at the very beginning stages of infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re actually finding PCR negatives that are going to be PCR positives in a week\u2019s time,\u201d the scientist, who\u2019s yet to publish her findings, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in Finland aren\u2019t the only ones who\u2019ve realized man\u2019s best friend\u2019s latest skill \u2014 from France to Lebanon to the UAE, scientists are reporting the same experience, Hielm-Bj\u00f6rkman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a problem when you have a test that is so much better than the gold standard, because you cannot validate it in any normal way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The olfactory glands in a dog\u2019s nose have long been praised for its extraordinary ability to sniff out everything from drugs to bombs, which humans and machines cannot currently detect.<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>So when the World Health Organization implored health officials globally to \u201ctest, test, test\u201d to help get the pandemic under control, researchers quickly wondered if dogs could play a role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost diseases have an odor. The way your body responds, the way your metabolism changes, gives off a distinct smell,\u201d James Logan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine told The Times. Prior to the pandemic, Logan was researching how well dogs could sniff out malaria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> cannot yet recreate instruments as exquisitely sensitive as their noses,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Logan\u2019s team is now working with the charity Medical Detection Dogs and he hopes pups will be able to what labs are struggling to do \u2014 quick screenings on a large scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dog can work in different environments. Dogs would tell you im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely whether that person ought to be taken for a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While pups will never be the panacea needed for testing because training is too difficult, researchers are hoping they can imitate the dog\u2019s olfactory glands with machines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also training a lot of machinery to do the same, so we hope that in the near future there will be more than just the dogs that are smelling disease,\u201d Hielm-Bj\u00f6rkman explained.<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-sniffing dogs are also much better at avoiding false negatives than the PCR test \u2014 another thing scientists hope to mimic in future testing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are much, much more accurate than any PCR at the moment,\u201d Hielm-Bj\u00f6rkman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPCRs are around 70 percent.
