There are so many movie projects that could have been \u2014 whole documentaries have been made about some of them, whole cult followings have risen up around axed movies<\/a> \u2014 but every now and then, we get a failed film that might have spared us a little pain in the long run. One such one\u00a0was\u00a0Jan de Bont<\/strong>\u2018s failed\u00a0Godzilla<\/em><\/strong> project, which the\u00a0Twister<\/em> and\u00a0Speed<\/em> director was developing before Roland Emmerich\u2019s infamously disliked 1998 version.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Polygon<\/a>\u00a0about his\u00a01999 remake of\u00a0The Haunting<\/em>, Jan de Bont revealed some details about his failed\u00a0Godzilla<\/em> reboot, which almost happ<\/a>ened \u2014 before Emmerich got involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to Japan, I met with the people at the studio, and they loved my version,\u201d de Bont. \u201cIt was basically that the visual effects at the time, and also special effects\u2014like the way they did in the [original]\u00a0Godzilla<\/em>\u00a0movies, which,\u00a0I had copies of all of them\u2014it became a battle about the budget. So the person who ended up doing the movie said that he could do it for like $40-50 million less than my budget. Mine was, I think, around $100 million or so. Of course, that never happens\u2014and his film ended up costing almost twice as much as my budget. Unfortunately, they believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201chim\u201d in this case is Emmerich, the director who at the time was coming off three big sci-fi hits:\u00a0Universal Soldier,\u00a0<\/em>Stargate<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Independence Day<\/em>. So while on paper, it might have made sense for the studio to go with a more dependable hitmaker \u2014 de Bont at the time was still fairly early in his career, despite directing two action hits\u00a0Speed\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Twister<\/em> \u2014 Emmerich\u2019s finished product, which starred Matthew Broderick and was soundly criticized for making Godzilla look more like a dinosaur than a mutant kaiju, left much to be desired.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s still nice to think about what could have been, and de Bont teased a vision of\u00a0Godzilla<\/em> that \u201cstayed true to the old\u00a0Godzilla<\/em>\u00a0movies, but then taking place in the United States\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the writers I had were fantastic, the script was so good. It stayed true to the old\u00a0Godzilla<\/em>\u00a0movies, but then taking place in the United States, which [the other movie] kept. But then they started by changing Godzilla! You cannot do that! After so many years, and everybody loving Godzilla, why would you want to change it? That was a big mistake. And then it became all about special effects, and that is never a good thing. I met some of the directors who did the earlier\u00a0Godzilla<\/em>\u00a0movies\u2014they were nice people, and the studio loved the take on it. We were really far into pre-production: set designs, locations, and then they saw the budget. \u2018Oh no, we don\u2019t spend that much money on the Godzilla movie.\u2019 Then they end up spending twice as much money.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But while Emmerich\u2019s version remains a blemish in the\u00a0Godzilla\u00a0<\/em>franchise, the kaiju has somewhat recovered its reputation in the States since then, headlining the 2014 Gareth Edwards blockbuster, Michael Dougherty\u2019s 2019 sequel\u00a0Godzilla: King of Monsters<\/em>, and going up against King Kong next in 2021, with Adam Wingard\u2019s Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>.<\/p>\n
