“#’SNL’ celebrated Joe Biden presidential Win like this<\/strong>”

\n It was no surprise this week that the last 2020 presidential election sketch of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d threw back to 2016\u2019s memorable result.<\/p>\n

Four years ago, an emotional Kate McKinnon, playing Hillary Clinton, sat behind a grand piano on the Studio 8H stage and played a mournful rendition of Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah\u201d to protest Donald Trump\u2019s shock victory. The comedy show was devastated and chucked their usual funny out the window.<\/p>\n

This time, however, it was Alec Baldwin\u2019s Trump at the keys.<\/p>\n

\u201cMacho, macho man,\u201d Baldwin sang from the Village People song. \u201cI want to be a macho man.\u201d Hardly hilarious, but you have to admire the show\u2019s dedication to their theme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Clearly, \u201cSNL\u201d never figured out how to turn the Trump years into laughs, despite so much ripe material, and this last episode was no exception.<\/p>\n

Accepting his victory, Jim Carrey\u2019s vanilla Joe Biden remarked, \u201cDo you believe it? I honestly kinda can\u2019t.\u201d The actor, who was always\u00a0a bland choice for the\u00a0president-elect, had nothing else to offer.<\/p>\n

Then Maya Rudolph arrived onstage as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, with genuine tears in her eyes, to acknowledge the history Harris made as the first black woman and Indian-American VP.<\/p>\n

\u201cBetween us,\u201d she said, \u201cwe check more boxes than a disqualified ballot.\u201d A solid one-liner, and a lovely, heartfelt moment.<\/p>\n

Honestly, I wish it would\u2019ve ended right there. The political commentary on this season of \u201cSNL\u201d has not been excoriating or incisive, clever or creative. Few will remember any of these dull, juvenile sketches like we have the genius of years past.<\/p>\n

Tonight could\u2019ve been a sweet, forceful show that acknowledged a win and a woman\u2019s historical achievement. But, dang it, they had to shove Baldwin\u2019s dreadful Trump impression in there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey started whittling away my votes,\u201d the actor said of the days-long state election counts. \u201cUntil there was a wittle bit weft.\u201d<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hope that\u2019s the last we hear of the godawful Baldwin as the 45th president on \u201cSNL.\u201d His performance was an irritating chore that drew ire from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n

Presidential elections wipe America\u2019s slate clean every four years. Let\u2019s also start afresh with our country\u2019s most important source of political satire, \u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
