“#Jets aren’t taking Cam Newton lightly: ‘MVP for a reason’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The Jets have faced their fair share of dynamic quarterbacks in the first half of this season and they don\u2019t expect the Patriots\u2019 Cam Newton to be any different.<\/p>\n

\u201cCam Newton is a former MVP for a reason,\u201d Jets cornerback Bless Austin said on a Zoom call Thursday. \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, we had [Chiefs QB] Pat Mahomes who was MVP, [Bills QB] Josh Allen was in the race earlier, so as far as talent is concerned, all of those are pretty much in the same tone and you have to respect each one of those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within the past four weeks, the Jets surrendered 300-plus passing yards to both Allen and the Cardinals\u2019 Kyle Murray. The Dolphins\u2019 Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tua Tagovailoa were held to a total of 200 passing yards against the Jets in Week 6, while Mahomes put on a clinic last Sunday with 416 yards and five touchdowns in the Chiefs\u2019 35-9 blowout win.<\/p>\n

Newton has only had one game<\/a> this season with more than 300 passing yards \u2014 Week 2 against the Seahawks \u2014 but the Jets are most focused on containing the 31-year-old\u2019s running.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really been problematic for other teams when he\u2019s run the ball,\u201d Jets coach Adam Gase said. \u201cThey\u2019re doing the zone-read stuff. When he\u2019s pulling it down and scrambling and creating first downs that way, that\u2019s been problematic. He\u2019s hit some good throws in some tight windows. I think it\u2019s just we have to make sure that he doesn\u2019t get in a great rhythm. That\u2019s the last thing you want to have happ<\/a>en with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve played him a few times in the past when he was at Carolina. I\u2019ve seen him get really hot, and that\u2019s the last thing you need. If he gets in a great rhythm, that\u2019s when it gets really scary.\u201d<\/p>\n
