McQueen\u2019s\u00a0<em>Small Axe<\/em> anthology is a collection of five feature films centering on London\u2019s West Indian community from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, starring high profile stars like\u00a0<strong>Letitia Wright<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>John Boyega<\/strong>. Several of the films made their debut at the 2020 virtual New York Film Festival, but all five films finally hit Amazon Prime Video this month.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Small_Axe_Trailer\"><\/span>Small Axe Trailer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Small Axe - Extended Anthology Trailer | Prime Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SjFAEy-0BLk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->In my review for\u00a0<em>Mangrove<\/em>, the first of McQueen\u2019s feature films in his\u00a0<em>Small Axe<\/em> anthology, I wondered whether the proper way to portray Black pain was to counterbalance it with Black joy. The latest trailer for\u00a0<em>Small Axe<\/em> seems to answer this, focusing on the joy that can be found within London\u2019s embattled West Indian community in the films of the\u00a0<em>Small Axe<\/em> anthology, named after the Jamaican proverb, \u201cIf you are a big tree, we are the small axe.\u201d The trailer is chock full of rapturous singing, dancing, and consumption of goat curry, even in the face of abject racism and harassment.<\/p>\n<p>The anthology consists of\u00a0<em>Mangrove<\/em>, <em>Lovers Rock<\/em>, <em>Red, White, and Blue<\/em>, <em>Alex Wheatle<\/em>, and <em>Education<\/em>, each of which is directed by McQueen,\u00a0who co-wrote three of the films with\u00a0<strong>Alastair Siddons<\/strong>\u00a0and two with\u00a0<strong>Courttia Newland<\/strong>. McQueen\u2019s signature style can be found all over the films, three of which \u2014\u00a0<em>Mangrove, Lovers Rock<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Red, White, and Blue<\/em> \u2014 debuted at NYFF, where they were some of the standouts of the festival.\u00a0<em>Mangrove<\/em> in particular was a fantastic showcase for\u00a0<strong>Letitia Wright<\/strong>, while\u00a0<strong>John Boyega<\/strong> gives one of the best performances of his career in\u00a0<em>Red, White, and Blue<\/em><em>.\u00a0<\/em>Other cast members of this impressive ensemble include\u00a0<strong>Malachi Kirby, Shaun Parkes, Rochenda Sandall, Alex Jennings,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Jack Lowden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the synopsis for\u00a0<em>Small Axe<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you are the big tree, we are the small axe.\u201d \u2013 Jamaican proverb.
