Let us explain.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Parler\"><\/span>What is Parler?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Parler is a social network founded by John Matze and Jared Thomson, two <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/parler-social-media-facebook-twitter-far-right-trump-supporters-john-matze-jared-thomson-1513378\">Nevada-based<\/a> conservative programmers, in 2018. But according to a post on the website from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/parler.com\/profile\/John\/posts\"><\/a> on Sunday, Parler has recently gained another 2 million new users.<\/p>\n<p>According to mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, Parler received an estimated 636,000 downloads from Google Play and the App Store in the U.S. on November 8. This topped Parler&#8217;s previous best day in June, when it received 119,000 new downloads. That was the day Twitter removed Trump&#8217;s manipulated &#8220;racist toddler&#8221; video because the copyright holder, the toddler&#8217;s parents, complained. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sensor Tower estimates that Parler has received more than 980,000 downloads in the U.S. since election day. In total, the app has been downloaded around 3.6 million times in the U.S.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_using_Parler\"><\/span>Who is using Parler?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Well, that depends on your definition of \u201cusing\u201d Parler.<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, Parler signed up a slew of new users over the summer. Some of these Parler users were just looking for a new conservative-friendly home in addition to the other social networks they were on. Others had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/qanon-loving-trump-sycophant-bill-mitchell-gets-permanently-booted-from-twitter\"><\/a>, as their content resulted in bans on the mainstream social media platforms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m proud to join <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/parler_app?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@parler_app<\/a> \u2014 a platform gets what free speech is all about \u2014 and I\u2019m excited to be a part of it. Johnson <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bennyjohnson\/status\/1275857378718728194\"><\/a> that his followers should move to Parler because he was \u201cdone\u201d with Twitter, which he described as &#8220;anti-free speech.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">10 years on Twitter.<br \/>I\u2019m done.<br \/>Disgusted with the censorship on this platform.<br \/>Twitter is now so aggressively ANTI Free Speech, it\u2019s not fun anymore.<br \/>Just got on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/parler_app?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@parler_app<\/a>.<br \/>It\u2019s refreshing, not like this communist gulag dumpster fire.<br \/>I\u2019m <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bennyjohnson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BennyJohnson<\/a> on Parler.<br \/>Go there for?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Benny (@bennyjohnson) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bennyjohnson\/status\/1275857378718728194?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 24, 2020<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, as Will Sommer of The Daily Beast <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/parler-the-trumpy-alternative-to-twitter-is-already-falling-apart\"><\/a> in July, many of these new conservative Parler users didn\u2019t actually use the platform. Johnson, Stuckey, and Miller all contributed to user Twitter multiple times a day while their Parler accounts laid bare for months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now that the election is over and Joe Biden has been declared the winner, Parler is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/parler-tops-app-store-ios-android-charts-conservatives-twitter-biden-trump-election-1545921\"><\/a> a new bump. It\u2019s currently the number one free app on the iOS App Store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And some of the users who abandoned Parler are coming back \u2014 at least for now. Johnson started posting on Parler on Sunday for the first time since August. Stuckey published a quick \u201chello\u201d as well, her first post since July.<\/p>\n<p>But Eric Trump, who has been posting nonstop on Twitter since the election, for example, hasn\u2019t posted on Parler in a week, even after it\u2019s gained in relevance again.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_Parler_%E2%80%9Ccensor%E2%80%9D_users\"><\/span>Does Parler &#8220;censor&#8221; users?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many conservatives claimed they joined Parler because of alleged censorship on the major social media platforms. However, for a social network that markets itself as a \u201cfree speech\u201d platform, there\u2019s a lot of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/07\/15\/parler-conservative-twitter-alternative\/\"><\/a> content that\u2019s censored on Parler \u2014\u00a0and it\u2019s not content Parler is legally bound to \u201ccensor\u201d either.<\/p>\n<p>Parler\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.parler.com\/community-guidelines\"><\/a> pornography, promoting marijuana, and obscenity. The site has already <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/parler-ted-cruz-approved-free-speech-app-already-banning-users-1514358\"><\/a> for breaking some of the site\u2019s more <em>specific<\/em> rules. Parler\u2019s rules also state that \u201cfalse rumors\u201d are banned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do not purposefully share rumors you know to be false about other users\/people,&#8221; reads Parler&#8217;s guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>This sounds a whole lot like a description of misinformation \u2014 the very reason many conservatives started using the website to begin with. (And it should be noted, platforms like Facebook and Twitter don&#8217;t ban users for most forms of misinformation. They simply add a warning label with a fact-check.)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_Parler_different_from_Facebook_Twitter_and_Reddit\"><\/span>How is Parler different from Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Parler is a little like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit all combined, with a mashup of features from these social platforms. This also means it\u2019s all very messy looking. The user interface has a lot of maturing to do if Parler wants itself taken seriously. It&#8217;s aesthetically unpleasing and very glitchy.<\/p>\n<p>One can follow other Parler users, tag those users in their posts, \u201cecho\u201d other content \u2014\u00a0the equivalent of a share or retweet \u2014 and\u00a0upvote posts they like. It\u2019s a lot.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s one interesting feature to hand to Parler, though: Parler verification basically allows any user to confirm they are who they say they are. When a user submits a form of identification to Parler, they will receive a badge that shows other users that the platform has confirmed their identity.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the equivalent of Twitter verification with blue checkmarks, though. Parler does have their own version of that, with gold badges for \u201cVerified Influencers.\u201d And, while many conservatives complain about people with \u201cblue checkmarks\u201d being handed VIP treatment on Twitter, Parler seems to promote their Verified Influencers even more. There\u2019s even a &#8220;Discover&#8221; section that pushes content purely from these influencers.<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest thing that sets Parler apart from other social media platforms is that users will find it\u2019s almost impossible to use it without encountering conservative political content. That\u2019s pretty much the entire user base, and it&#8217;s all they post about. There\u2019s no other social media site like that (except maybe Facebook&#8230;OK, I kid! ).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_future_of_Parler\"><\/span>What&#8217;s the future of Parler?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Is Parler here to stay? It\u2019s hard to tell. It&#8217;s become very popular on mobile app charts before. But many conservatives didn\u2019t stick around for long. No \u201calternative\u201d social networks, like Gab or Minds or BitChute, have broken through the big social media platforms to become just as popular. For comparison, Facebook has 2.7 billion users. Twitter has 330 million. How do you keep your platform from turning into a white supremacist haven like other right-wing social media platforms without losing your \u201cfree speech\u201d bona fides? And, once you start moderating that content, what&#8217;s going to keep conservatives from leaving a platform that no longer prioritizes &#8220;free speech&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, that\u2019s a question for Dan Bongino to figure out. Bongino is a popular conservative personality. His posts on Facebook are often some of the most shared content on the entire site, beating out <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlets like CNN and Fox News and, sometimes, even President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Bongino <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bongino.com\/dan-bongino-announces-partnership-with-parler\">announced a partnership<\/a> with Parler, including the news that he&#8217;d purchased an ownership stake in the company. The \u201cfree speech\u201d social network has been plastered with his content ever since.<\/p>\n<p>But, perhaps the biggest element determining Parler&#8217;s future is the president himself. A majority of the content on the site is centered around Trump. Yet, while his reelection campaign is quite active on the site, Trump is MIA on the platform.
