\n Scientists weren\u2019t able to prove that this \u201clove drug\u201d is worth the hype.<\/p>\n

Researchers found that, despite its reputation, MDMA \u2014 often referred to as ecstasy \u2014 did not increase trust, cooperative behavior or empathy in study participants.<\/p>\n

These findings, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology<\/a>, were determined by subjecting 25 people to two sessions where they were dosed with either a placebo or MDMA. Once dosed, participants completed a series<\/a> of social<\/a> assessment tasks, including playing a dictator game<\/a>, an ultimatum game and a public project game.<\/p>\n

While \u201cMDMA acutely increased self-reported \u2018closeness to others\u2019 and \u2018euphoria,\u2019 \u201d it did not have a significant impact on \u201ctask-based empathy, trust or cooperative behavior,\u201d the authors found in the experiment.<\/p>\n

However, researchers acknowledge that this finding, at odds with the public perception of the so-called \u201cparty drug,\u201d may be a result of the sterile site of their double-blind study.<\/p>\n

\u201cOften ostensibly clear-cut drug effects can be difficult to robustly replicate in a laboratory setting,\u201d study authors Anya Borissova and Will Lawn recently told PsyPost<\/a>. \u201cThis may be because these app<\/a>arently prominent effects are not so real after all, or because laboratory measures are insensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

For example, the study tested if MDMA increased trust in social interactions via a computer task involving whether to share money online \u2014 quite a contrast to the context and situations in which people are general<\/a>ly known for taking the drug.<\/p>\n

The study also didn\u2019t find evidence of another common perception of the drug: That it has a horrible, belated hangover.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the well-known \u2018come-down\u2019 effects observed with recreational ecstasy use, MDMA was safe without any bad effects on people\u2019s moods in the days after the study,\u201d the authors added. \u201cThis is crucially important when considering the side-effects of MDMA administration in clinical groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently there has been increased research and de-stigmatization of the drug with respect to using MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).\n <\/p><\/div>\n
