Anytime someone involved with a TV show says something like, \u201cThis isn\u2019t really a TV show, it\u2019s a 6\/8\/12-hour movie!\u201d, I get a little nervous. Netflix does this all the time, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn\u2019t. More often than not, it results in some lopsided, poorly paced TV. But that\u2019s not going to stop the folks behind\u00a0WandaVision<\/em><\/strong>, darn it! The series is app<\/a>arently taking the \u201cmovie broken into a TV show\u201d approach according to cast member\u00a0Teyonah Parris<\/strong>. But not just\u00a0one<\/em> movie, oh no. According to Parris,\u00a0WandaVision<\/em> is like \u201csix Marvel movies packed into\u201d a sitcom.<\/p>\n

People are missing Marvel movies right now (2020 is the first year without an MCU film in approximately 5000 years, according to a figure I just made up), but\u00a0WandaVision<\/em> is coming to pick up the slack. Because not only will the show bring viewers back to the MCU, it\u2019ll pack enough material for six MCU movies into one show.
\nSpeaking with EW<\/a>,\u00a0Teyonah Parris,\u00a0who plays the adult Monica Rambeau \u2013 the kid we met in\u00a0Captain Marvel<\/em> \u2013 said: \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, I thought we were doing a little show,\u2019 but no, it\u2019s six Marvel movies packed into what they\u2019re presenting as a sitcom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-executive producer\u00a0Mary Livanos<\/strong> added:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s really incredible to be able to tell a long-form story the way the comics did. In a sense, [a TV show] is a multi-issue comic-book run, which is something that, from the Marvel development side, we totally do understand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Livanos does have a point in comparing this long-form story to a comic book approach, so I really don\u2019t want to complain too much. But as I mentioned above, whenever TV episodes forgo being, well, episodic, I tend to get nervous. Think of\u00a0Mad Men<\/em>, or\u00a0Breaking Bad<\/em>, or\u00a0The Sopranos<\/em>. Hell, think of\u00a0Frasier<\/em> or\u00a0Cheers<\/em>. Or\u00a0The Simpsons<\/em>. Or\u00a0E.R.<\/em>\u00a0These are some of the best TV shows in the history of the medium, and they all have one thing in common: they\u2019re not trying to be 12-plus hour movies. Do some of the episodes carry over into others to tell one narrative? Sure, but they can also stand alone. I know this is apparently a controversial statement, but here\u2019s the thing: TV isn\u2019t the same as movies. They are different mediums, and it\u2019s best to treat them that way.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige<\/strong> does assure potential viewers that you don\u2019t need to be well-versed in all-things-Marvel to jump into\u00a0WandVision<\/em>. \u201cIf you haven\u2019t seen any of them [Marvel movies] and just want to step into this weird thing because you love The Dick Van Dyke Show<\/em>, it\u2019s going to work,\u201d Feige told EW. \u201cBut if you\u2019ve been tracking the 23 movies we\u2019ve made and following along the stories into Phase 4, there\u2019ll be a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

WandaVision<\/em> hits Disney+ in December.
