\n Drew Brees struck a nerve with his comments about how kneeling during the national anthem is \u201cdisrespecting the flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the release of his interview with Yahoo Sports Wednesday, the longtime Saints quarterback was met with significant backlash for his response to a question about the possibility of NFL players kneeling \u2014 as Colin Kaepernick and others did in 2016 \u2014 during the national anthem this upcoming season. Brees said he can never support those actions.<\/p>\n

Fans, his fellow New Orleans teammates and other athletes, like LeBron James, have denounced Brees\u2019 comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWOW MAN!!\u201d James wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cIs it still surprising at this point. Sure isn\u2019t! You literally still don\u2019t understand why Kap was kneeling on one knee?? Has absolute nothing to do with the disrespect of [the flag] and our soldiers(men and women) who keep our land free.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father-in-law was one of those men who fought as well for this country. I asked him question about it and thank him all the time for his commitment. He never found Kap peaceful protest offensive because he and I both know what\u2019s right is right and what\u2019s wrong is wrong! God bless you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former NFLer and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark also chimed in with his perception of Brees\u2019 comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways knew who he was! Every time y\u2019all came at me and said I couldn\u2019t come home because I didn\u2019t think he was Jesus. Oh well! Keep cheering,\u201d Clark wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Jason and Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots called Brees\u2019 interview a \u201cdisgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a disgrace! To speak about your grandfathers as if there weren\u2019t black men fighting next to them,\u201d the McCourty brothers\u2019 joint Twitter account wrote. \u201cThose men later returned to a country that hated them. Don\u2019t avoid the issue and try to make it about a flag or the military. Fight like your grandfathers for whats right!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jets star safety Jamal Adams was also clearly disapp<\/a>ointed in Brees.<\/p>\n

\u201cDammit Drew\u2026,\u201d Adams wrote.<\/p>\n

ESPN Radio host Peter Rosenberg recorded a video response to a clip of Brees\u2019 interview with Yahoo Finance to offer his thoughts as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cShout out to Drew Brees for officially becoming the captain of the \u2018you\u2019re missing the point, white privilege, Hall of Fame\u2019 club,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
